Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis headed over to the White House for one of the most important meetings of Donald Trump’s Presidency.
This meeting could shape the direction of the country for the next two years.
But then Mattis walked into the White House and revealed a secret that no one expected.
Mattis was one of Donald Trump’s All-Star cabinet selections.
Trump choosing Mattis to lead the Pentagon led to praise coming in from across the political spectrum.
Even the Never Trump Republicans and fake news media members lauded Trump’s choice to serve as Secretary of Defense.
However, Mattis had more establishment views on foreign policy.
And that came in to conflict with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda.
Trump retains the support of his base because he works to keep his campaign promises.
When he ran for President, he promised to end Barack Obama’s mistake in Syria.
The President made good on his word when he ordered the military to bring home the 2,000 troops stationed in Syria.
Trump correctly argued that the Syrian civil war was not America’s fight and now that since the military smashed ISIS’s caliphate it was time to come home.
Mattis journeyed to the White House in order to change Trump’s mind.
The Secretary of Defense wanted the President to stick with the Obama plan of endless war.
But Trump refused to budge.
So Mattis resigned.
In his resignation letter, he cited his disagreements with Trump on policy for why he stepped down.
Mattis wrote, “Like you, I have said from the beginning that the armed forces of the United States should not be the policeman of the world. Instead, we must use all tools of American power to provide for the common defense, including providing effective leadership to our alliances. NATO’s 29 democracies demonstrated that strength in their commitment to fighting alongside us following the 9-11 attack on America. The Defeat-ISIS coalition of 74 nations is further proof.”
Democrats, fake news reporters and RINO Republicans whined that Mattis stepping down was the end of the world.
Virginia Democrat Mark Warner – who routinely spreads baseless conspiracy theories about Trump and Russia – claimed Mattis resigning was “scary.”
Warner wrote, “This is scary. Secretary Mattis has been an island of stability amidst the chaos of the Trump administration. As we’ve seen with the President’s haphazard approach to Syria, our national defense is too important to be subjected to the President’s erratic whims.”
But what many Americans find “scary” is the establishment foreign policy figures like Warner argued that Mattis represented.
America has been at war in Afghanistan for 17 years and Iraq for 15 years.
Despite the heroism of our troops and their sacrifice, Americans are wondering what longer troop deployments will accomplish.
Trump was determined not to make the mistakes Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama made.
The President argued our military should be defending our border instead of those in faraway lands.
That message helped win him the election.
And at the end of the day – despite how much Washington may hate it – Trump makes military policy and it’s up to Generals like Mattis to carry it out.
Mattis resigning is his right, but the conniptions in D.C. are more over the fact that Donald Trump is asserting his vision for an America First foreign policy.
