Democrats are looking at a challenging 2024 political environment.
The Senate is up for grabs and Joe Biden is unpopular.
And a secret billion-dollar payment could ruin this top Democrat.
Democrats are defending 21 of 33 Senate seats up in 2024, many of which are in red states.
One of the most difficult seats for Democrats to hold is that of West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin.
Donald Trump carried West Virginia by 39 points in 2020 and the Mountaineer State shifted into deep red territory.
Manchin was already facing an uphill fight due to the fact that Manchin lied to West Virginia voters about being pro-Second Amendment and anti-Green New Deal.
In reality, Manchin put his name on bill to create a national gun registration database and voted for a Green New Deal bill to help destroy the American energy industry by pushing the public to buy expensive and inefficient electric vehicles.
Now Manchin is dealing with scandal as bombshell reporting from Fox Business showed Manchin as the prototypical swamp creature steering as much as $1 billion in projects where his Gayle wife plays a significant role such as Appalachian Regional Commission.
Fox Business reports:
One of the larger examples of Manchin’s ability to boost funding for projects involving his wife is the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), a federal-state partnership dedicated to boosting Appalachian region economies. The White House appointed Gayle Manchin in April 2021 to be the federal co-chair of ARC.
While the bipartisan commission has received annual funding of roughly $165 million to $200 million from Congress since 2019, it received a staggering $1 billion in late 2021 under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which Sen. Manchin had co-sponsored and championed. After the Senate passed the legislation, Manchin celebrated the billions of dollars that would be sent to West Virginia-based initiatives, but didn’t mention the ARC funding.
The Appalachian Regional Commission tried to defend this swamp insider dealing.
“As a result of the positive impact of ARC’s work in the region to support economic and community development, the Commission has received strong bipartisan support from Members of United States Senate and House of Representatives in recent years,” Appalachian Regional Commission spokesperson Janiene Bohannon statement to Fox Business Channel read.
This was not the only time Manchin steered taxpayer money to projects where his wife played a leading role.
In Aril 2018 the U.S. Department of Agriculture steered $39.6 billion in federal loans to Bethany College where Gayle Manchin served as a trustee between 2012 and 2021.
And in 2019 the Department of Agriculture handed Reconnecting McDowell – where Gayle Manchin held numerous leadership roles since 2011 – a $250,000 federal grant.
Manchin tried to defend his insider influence peddling.
“Senator Manchin’s position on the Senate Appropriations Committee uniquely positions him to fight for causes important to West Virginia,” a statement from Manchin’s office read. “The loans and grants specially outlined in this article were all announced with bipartisan support from both state and federal legislators representing West Virginia.”
With 2024 being a presidential election year Republican figures to have a huge advantage heading into the election as the top of the ticket will win by 30 plus points.
If the GOP can find a solid conservative to run against Manchin and not some Mitch McConnell selected RINO Republicans should flip this seat.
