Chicago’s mayor was unable to stop the looting that went out of control.
She’s desperately trying to cling to her control.
A top Democrat was forced to beg for Trump’s help after a night of destruction.
The riots and looting in Chicago from Sunday night into Monday morning injured 13 police officers and caused more than $60 million in damages.
The Democrats have responded to the violent riots by demanding that the police budgets be cut because they claim that policing in America is racist.
Black Lives Matter held a rally in Chicago the next day to support the approximately 100 protesters who had been arrested.
One organizer claimed that looting luxury stores was justified as “reparations.”
“I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,” said Ariel Atkins, a BLM organizer, according to NBC Chicago. “That makes sure that person has clothes.”
What these people don’t seem to understand is that they are hurting their own communities.
Even Chicago’s Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot is fed up with the protests.
“This is not legitimate 1st Amendment-protected speech. These were not poor people engaging in petty theft to feed themselves and their families,” Lightfoot said in a press conference. “This was straight up-felony, criminal conduct.”
The reason the looting and violence started was because rumors spread through social media that the police shot an unarmed 15-year-old boy however the actual facts of the case were far different.
“Number one, the individual who fired on police yesterday and was taken into custody was a 20-year-old man — he was not a juvenile and he was not unarmed. Officers responded because they received a 911 call about a man with a gun with a very specific description,” Lightfoot said. “A foot chase ensued, the individual fled. He turned around, he fired upon the police, the police returned fire. He was hit in the shoulder and is recovering from the injuries. But I want to be clear this was not an unarmed individual as propagated on social media.”
Lightfoot went on to frame the issue as one of gun control and said the president needed to give more money to the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms bureau to help the Chicago police.
Even if Trump gave her the help that she is asking for it wouldn’t fix Chicago’s problems.
Lightfoot said that she would not call in the National Guard which is what she should have done the moment the riots got out of control.
Getting guns off the streets isn’t going to stop a large mob from forming but authorities standing up to protesters would make a difference.
