Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has let it be known she is considering running for higher office.
Ocasio-Cortez’s decision could determine the future of the Democrat Party for the next decade.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a 2024 decision that will change everything for Kamala Harris.
Rumors began circulating that Ocasio-Cortez planned to challenge New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in a primary next year.
But Ocasio-Cortez will not enter that race.
“She is not planning to run for Senate in 2024. She is not planning to primary Gillibrand,” Ocasio-Cortez spokeswoman Lauren Hitt told POLITICO.
It’s only a matter of time until Ocasio-Cortez looks to run for higher office.
And that time could come in 2028 when no matter what happens in 2024, the Democrats will hold an open primary.
That would put Ocasio-Cortez up against the hugely unpopular Kamala Harris.
John Kerry said someone like Ocasio-Cortez — an outspoken socialist minority woman — would be someone the Democrat Party could get behind and elect as president.
In an interview last year with GQ Magazine, Ocasio-Cortez made it clear she is considering running for president although she thinks America is too racist and sexist to let her win.
“I hold two contradictory things [in mind] at the same time. One is just the relentless belief that anything is possible,” Ocasio-Cortez told the magazine. “But at the same time, my experience here has given me a front-row seat to how deeply and unconsciously, as well as consciously, so many people in this country hate women. And they hate women of color. People ask me questions about the future. And realistically, I can’t even tell you if I’m going to be alive in September. And that weighs very heavily on me. And it’s not just the right wing. Misogyny transcends political ideology: left, right, center. This grip of patriarchy affects all of us, not just women; men, as I mentioned before, but also, ideologically, there’s an extraordinary lack of self-awareness in so many places. And so those are two very conflicting things. I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen.”
Ocasio-Cortez then complained that Congress plays too small a role in policy-making and setting the agenda for the nation as it reacts to what the president proposes or the parameters the executive sets on legislative deal-making.
When the GQ writer told Ocasio-Cortez she made the perfect case as to why she should run for president, Ocasio-Cortez admitted she had the same thoughts.
“I try to think about how I can be most effective and, honestly, to this point, I have not come up with an alternative that I have found more effective than what I’m doing at the present moment,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “But this is something that I routinely revisit.”
Democrats know Kamala Harris cannot win a national election.
And the party’s woke base may not tolerate another white male nominee in the form of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
No one on the left plays identity politics better than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and that could prove to be her ticket to the Democrat nomination in 2028.
