Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided to make a seriously risky gamble.
She now has major pressure on her.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a million dollar payment that could get her in big trouble.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just paid $1.4 million from her campaign funds to create T-shirts and hats with slogans such as “Tax the Rich” and “Abolish ICE.”
She paid the large sum to Financial Innovations, a companies that specializes in political merchandise.
The Daily Mail commented this is almost double what Ocasio-Cortez has paid in past years.
Andrew Frawley, who managed the merchandise operation for Andrew Yang’s 2020 presidential campaign, said that Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign can expect to make at least a 50% profit from sales of the merchandise, much of which bears her initials.
“A movement you can wear,” it the greeting on the front page of the “official AOC team shop.”
“At her online store at shop.ocasiocortez.com, the former bartender is selling sweatshirts that say, ‘TAX THE RICH.’ You can also buy a ‘New Green Deal’ coffee mug for $27. Then there’s the ‘Drink Water & Don’t Be Racist’ T-shirt for $27. And the ‘cancel student debt’ shirt for the same price. And the ‘ABOLISH ICE’ dad hat for $28. But the ‘SOCIAL ECONOMIC RACIAL JUSTICE’ sweatshirt will set you back $65.” The Daily Wire reported.
While Financial Innovations claims that its products are “ethically sourced” the company has not been transparent about the individual factories or companies its products are sourced from.
The company has also created merchandise for Elizabeth Warren, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden.
“There’s the campaign finance aspect of it and, for lack of a better term, there’s the cult of personality aspect of it,” Cara Torres-Spelliscy, who studies political branding at Stetson University told the Daily Mail.
Former Trump White House press secretary Sean Spicer posted the commented on Twitter that Ocasio-Cortez is “using capitalism to push socialism.”
Ocasio-Cortez tried to justify herself by explaining that her online store isn’t capitalism.
“Not sure if you know this Sean, but transactions aren’t capitalism. Capitalism is a system that prioritizes profit at any & all human/enviro cost,” she wrote.
“But [for what it’s worth] our shop is unionized, doesn’t operate for profit, & funds projects like free tutoring, food programs, & local organizing.”
Ocasio-Cortez, an economics major, doesn’t seem to understand what the definition of capitalism is.
Merriam-Webster’s defines capitalism as:
“An economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign has raised approximately $6.9 million since the November election.
