Up until now, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s rise to political stardom faced no turbulence.
But that’s all about to change.
And it’s because Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez signed this piece of paper that will change her life forever.
Democrats are grappling with how to respond to the Mueller report.
Their voters demand Speaker Nancy Pelosi push forward with an impeachment inquiry.
But polls show impeachment is broadly unpopular, and many political strategists agree that a partisan impeachment drive will only serve to boost Donald Trump’s re-election chances.
However, given the choice between pleasing their base or following a politically prudent path, many Democrats don’t see it as a choice at all.
They are gung-ho for impeachment.
And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stuck her neck out to be the public face in this fight.
Ocasio-Cortez announced she would put her name on radical Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib’s letter demanding Congress move forward with an impeachment inquiry.
The freshman Democrat wrote, “Mueller’s report is clear in pointing to Congress’ responsibility in investigating obstruction of justice by the President. It is our job as outlined in Article 1, Sec 2, Clause 5 of the US Constitution. As such, I’ll be signing onto @RashidaTlaib’s impeachment resolution.”
But this is terrible news for the Democrats running for President.
They want to duck this fight at all costs.
Only Elizabeth Warren – whose candidacy is struggling to gain traction – jumped on the impeachment bandwagon.
“Mueller put the next step in the hands of Congress: “Congress has authority to prohibit a President’s corrupt use of his authority in order to protect the integrity of the administration of justice.” The correct process for exercising that authority is impeachment,” Warren tweeted.
“The severity of this misconduct demands that elected officials in both parties set aside political considerations and do their constitutional duty. That means the House should initiate impeachment proceedings against the President of the United States,” she concluded.
It’s not surprising that Ocasio-Cortez and Warren seized on the opportunity to become the public faces of a partisan impeachment push.
Ocasio-Cortez is a creature of the Democrat Party base.
There is no idea too extreme or too far out on the fringes of Democrat thought for Ocasio-Cortez to embrace.
And Elizabeth Warren entered this Presidential election cycle considered to be one of the heavyweights in the field.
But Donald Trump destroyed her with the Pocahontas nickname and Warren’s botched response diminished her standing.
Now Warren is struggling to raise money and even polls in her home state of Massachusetts find her resting in the middle of the pack.
Warren needs political oxygen in the worst way and tying herself to impeachment is her best – and maybe last – chance to break out in the ever increasingly crowded Democrat Presidential primary field.
And while the other contenders for the nomination can easily ignore Warren, they cannot give Ocasio-Cortez the cold shoulder.
Soon, every Democrat running will have to stake out their position on impeachment.
And they know they can’t get to the General Election unless they win the primary.
