It’s not always good for Democrats when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is driving the policy discussion.
The American left may learn that lesson the hard way.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will lose her mind when she sees the results of this poll.
Democrats like South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn believe the push to defund the police is why Republicans gained double digit seats in the House of Representatives in 2020 when all the experts thought the GOP would lose 15 to 20 seats.
There is data to back up how politically toxic the defund the police message really is.
A brand new USA Today/Suffolk University poll found that by a nine to one margin the residents of Detroit want more – and not fewer – police on the streets.
USA Today reports:
Amid a jump in violent crime in this and other cities nationwide, Detroit residents report being much more worried about public safety than about police misconduct, a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University/Detroit Free Press Poll finds.
By an overwhelming 9-1, they would feel safer with more cops on the street, not fewer. Though one-third complain that Detroit police use force when it isn’t necessary – and Black men report high rates of racial profiling – those surveyed reject by 3-1 the slogan of some progressives to “defund the police.”
“It’s scary sitting in the house, and when you go outside to the gas station or the store, it’s possible someone will be shooting right next to you,” said Charlita Bell, 41, a lifelong Detroit resident who was among those called in the poll. Last year, when her car was hit by stray bullets during a shopping trip, she hurried home rather than wait for the police for fear the shooter might return.
Defund the police advocates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claim law enforcement is systemically racist, and that police target minority communities for abuse and harassment.
But Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not deterred.
Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez took defunding the police a step further and recently came out in favor of abolishing the prison system.
“I want to abolish our carceral system that’s designed to trap Black and Brown men,” Ocasio-Cortez declared. “I want justice. I want peace, and I want prosperity. That’s what I want.”
This is not the message Democrats want to define their party in the minds of Americans.
The polling data is clear that even heavily Democratic areas like Detroit want government to spend more money on police officers as opposed to less.
If Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost the argument about defunding the police in Detroit there is likely nowhere in the country that this policy garners any meaningful level of support.
