Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is quickly becoming the most controversial Democrat in America.
She continually finds herself wrapped up in crises and scandals that could bring down the Democrat Party.
But now her career may be over because of this jaw dropping betrayal.
Ocasio-Cortez made waves in recent months when she called for primary challengers to run against the Democrats who did not sign up for her socialist agenda.
Many Democrats privately acknowledge that her radical policy agenda, such as the “Green New Deal”—which proposes banning cars, airplane travel, cows, and nuclear and gas sources of energy—will push the Democrats off a political cliff.
But they also can read the scoreboard.
Ocasio-Cortez has millions of followers on social media that she can unleash on any Democrat who questions the wisdom of her anti-American agenda.
However, some Democrats have proposed recruiting a primary challenger to run against her in 2020.
“What I have recommended to the New York delegation is that you find her a primary opponent and make her a one-term congressperson,” a Democratic member of Congress told The Hill in an exclusive interview. “You’ve got numerous council people and state legislators who’ve been waiting 20 years for that seat. I’m sure they can find numerous people who want that seat in that district.”
This is likely a losing strategy.
Primary contests are dominated by the most ideologically committed activists.
Ocasio-Cortez already owns that crowd.
And a primary challenger running against her from the right is doomed to fail.
Nor would the campaign teach Ocasio-Cortez a lesson.
Just the threat of a primary challenge led to a surge in donations without her even having to lift a finger.
If Democrats believe running a primary challenger would force her to reconsider her tactics because it would result in the slog of campaign work, they need to think again.
But Democrats do have one more option.
Every ten years, states redraw their Congressional districts in accordance with the census.
States gain or lose Congressional seats based on population movements, and so the maps must be redrawn.
New York is set to lose a Congressional seat in 2020.
Democrats could rid themselves of Ocasio-Cortez by eliminating her Congressional district.
Ocasio-Cortez is well aware that the powers that be in the Democrat Party could use every tool at their disposal to cut her career in Congress short.
“I don’t know if that means that all of our districts are going to be redrawn dramatically, because they have been historically gerrymandered, or what will happen, but there’s certainly a possibility, if not a guarantee, that my district in the coming years will not look like my district today,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept. “So I think it’s entirely possible, and New York politics being what it is, we have no idea where things are going to go.”
Major Democrats running for President like Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren immediately signed up for Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist agenda of wealth taxes and “Green New Deals.”
If the Democrats lose in 2020 because Donald Trump successfully casts the campaign as a referendum on his “America First” agenda vs. the Democratic nominee embracing the un-American policy proposals put forth by Ocasio-Cortez, the party may be forced to take dramatic action.
