Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has her foot securely in her mouth without much hope of having it removed.
In 2019, which will be her first full year in office, she’s filled the headlines with numerous (and hilarious) gaffes which have subjected her to ridicule.
But as of today, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s most embarrassing moment of 2019 is caught on tape and will haunt her forever.
And there’s no doubt she’s wishing she could roll back the clock on this one. Not only did it make her look ridiculous in front of an entire room of her colleagues, but even her most ardent supporters are also blushing because of her blatant idiocy.
In an exchange with the director of ICE, Thomas Honan, AOC tried to “figure out” how to resolve the issue of children being separated from their parents after they’re detained upon capture for entering the country illegally.
To Ocasio-Cortez, the inhumanity of removing a child from the custody of their parent after they commit a crime is confusing.
Which is why her decision to continue with a line of questioning asking former ICE chief Thomas Homan why children were taken from their parents was patently hilarious.
Homan, who has gone over in graphic detail just how dangerous allowing illegal immigration is, explained to Ocasio-Cortez that when a citizen in the U.S. commits a crime with their child in tow, they are removed from the presence of their children.
The decision of border patrol to act similarly towards immigrants is no different than how they treat Americans, he said.
A portion of the exchange went as follows:
AOC: “The recommendation, of the many you recommended, you recommended family separation.
Homan: “I recommended zero-tolerance. The same it is with every U.S. citizen parent gets arrested with their child.”
AOC then said that arresting parents coming in with their children violated the law that allows people wishing to take asylum the chance to avoid arrest, to which Homan replied, they need to go to a legal port of entry, and those who don’t, are arrested and separated from their children.
Cortez looked around the room, seemingly confused by this answer.
It’s as if the nation’s laws she’s sworn to uphold didn’t make sense to her.
Sensing that she was less than qualified to interrogate him, Homan voiced frustration with the procedural failings of Congress on this matter.
Commenting that none of them knew what he was dealing with as the director of ICE, he pointed out how genuinely ignorant they were to the reality of what was happening on the ground.
“I’m the only one in this room who has worn a green uniform and been on that line. I’m the only one in this room who’s found dead aliens on a trail that were abandoned by smugglers,” he said.
Even her supporters let her know how dumb she looked.
Many used Twitter to tweet at her that she just made all Democrats look stupid by not understanding how basic U.S. law worked.
AOC ought to get a band-aid to cover the burns she just sustained.
