Unlike past ex-Presidents, Barack Obama did not fade away into obscurity.
Obama dove headfirst into the political arena.
Barack Obama celebrated one victory that is bad news for Donald Trump.
One of the most under reported stories from Obama’s two terms in office was the down-ballot wipeout Democrats suffered in the backlash to Obama’s anti-American agenda.
Democrats lost 1,000 seats at every level of government during the Obama administration.
Republicans’ victories cemented their dominance at the state House level.
And because the census was in 2010, the tea party wave in that year’s midterm elections handed the GOP control over the once a decade process of redrawing state legislative and Congressional District maps.
One state where Republicans won control of state government was North Carolina.
The Republican-controlled legislature drew a district map that Democrats howled was “unfair.”
And by “unfair”, what Democrats meant was that the map allowed Republicans to win elections.
Democrats responded by suing.
And the North Carolina State Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Republicans and threw out the GOP drawn map.
“The conclusions of this Court today reflect the unanimous and best efforts of the undersigned trial judges — each hailing from different geographic regions and each with differing ideological and political outlooks — to apply core constitutional principles to this complex and divisive topic,” the Justices wrote in their opinion.
Republican State Senate leader Phil Berger blasted the decision.
“We disagree with the court’s ruling as it contradicts the Constitution and binding legal precedent, but we intend to respect the court’s decision and finally put this divisive battle behind us,” Berger declared. “Nearly a decade of relentless litigation has strained the legitimacy of this state’s institutions, and the relationship between its leaders, to the breaking point. It’s time to move on.”
Democrats cheered the decision – and none were happier than Barack Obama.
“Yesterday’s ruling is a big win for North Carolina—and for all of us. Voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around. This win is proof that change is always within our reach, on gerrymandering, voting rights, and much more,” Obama tweeted.
Since leaving office, Obama and his former Attorney General Eric Holder made redistricting their primary cause.
Obama and Holder started the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
The group supports Democrat candidates that pledge to support legislative maps that lock Republicans out of power.
This project is key for Democrats.
The most consequential government often times happens at the state level.
If Democrats can wrest control of state legislatures in 2020 and draw the maps to entrench their majorities, Democrats can roll back conservative policy achievements such as pro-life legislation, bills that promote the Second Amendment and state Right to Work laws.
That would fundamentally shift America away from the traditional values and principles that made America the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth.
Conservative Revival will keep you up to date on any new developments in this ongoing story.
