Barack Obama is out for revenge against Donald Trump.
The former President wants payback for Trump winning the 2016 election and erasing his disastrous legacy.
And Barack Obama turned heads with this plan for revenge against Donald Trump in 2020.
In 2016, Barack Obama endorsed Hillary Clinton during the primary campaign to help her clear the field.
Obama’s thinking was that the easier the path Clinton had in the primary, the better positioned she’d be for the General Election.
That plan blew up when Hillary Clinton belly flopped and lost.
So in 2020, Obama is taking a new approach.
The former President is not backing any candidate until a nominee is decided.
Obama announced this plan in an email where he unveiled the Democratic Unity Fund, which will pour resources into the campaign of the eventual Democrat nominee in an effort to oust President Trump from office.
“I’m excited that the DNC asked me to announce a bold new effort: The Democratic Unity Fund. Launching today, the fund will be dedicated to electing our party’s eventual presidential nominee and winning up and down the ballot in 2020,” Obama said.
“The Democratic Unity Fund is a promise that whoever earns our nomination, he or she will have a strong, united, and well-organized DNC ready to spring into action the moment the general election starts — a DNC that’s ready to lift us all to victory in November,” Obama added.
Obama’s new initiative comes at the expense of former Vice President Joe Biden.
While Biden is the clear Democrat Party frontrunner, Obama refused to endorse him when he entered the race.
“President Obama has long said that selecting Joe Biden as his running mate in 2008 was one of the best decisions he ever made,” Obama spokeswoman Katie Hill said in a statement after Biden announced his candidacy.
“He relied on the Vice President’s knowledge, insight, and judgment throughout both campaigns and the entire presidency. The two forged a special bond over the last 10 years and remain close today.”
But while the statement was supportive of Biden, it was far from an endorsement.
And it may reflect Obama’s hesitance about Biden’s ability to go the distance.
Obama does not want to suffer a second straight Presidential election embarrassment.
Former Vice President Biden played it off like Obama wanted to help but that he nobly insisted winning the nomination on his own.
“I asked President Obama not to endorse,” Biden told a Fox News.
Biden also claimed that “whoever wins this nomination should win it on their own merits.”
But if Obama actually wanted to endorse Biden, the former Vice President would have walked across hot coals to receive his support.
That could explain Obama’s low-risk “Democratic Unity Fund.”
Democrats saw how coalescing behind the establishment-favored candidate in 2016 backfired.
And since they are so desperate to defeat Donald Trump, Obama and his allies don’t care about taking steps that may prolong the primary campaign.
