Bernie Sanders has emerged as the leading Democratic primary candidate.
But his campaign is in serious trouble.
This new poll could spell disaster for the Sanders campaign in a way no one expected.
Bernie Sanders is once again running for president.
But this time, the man who lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016 is now considered one of the leading contenders for the Democratic nomination for president.
Sanders could very well be the nominee next summer and ultimately face off against President Trump in the 2020 election.
But there’s still a major problem for Sanders to overcome.
And the latest polling suggests he’s falling short.
Breitbart reports, “Former Vice President Joe Biden is significantly leading the Democratic primary race in South Carolina according to a poll released on Monday.”
South Carolina is one of the key early states in the primary process.
The winner of the state will go on to have serious momentum behind their backs heading into future contests such as Florida.
If Sanders can win South Carolina, there’s a good chance he will become the Democratic nominee.
If he loses the state, his path to victory becomes much smaller.
And if he gets blown out of the state, his chances of winning the nomination shrink dramatically.
And right now, it appears like he’s about to get slaughtered in South Carolina, if former Obama Vice President Joe Biden gets into the race.
Biden holds a commanding lead over Sanders in South Carolina according to this poll, with 32% of those contacted choosing Biden while just 14% back Sanders.
“Biden leads the field convincingly with 32 percent of the vote, according to a poll of voters conducted by Change Research, while Sen. Bernie Sanders only has 14 percent support. Kamala Harris comes in third place with 10 percent followed by Cory Booker and Beto O’Rourke tied at nine percent,” adds Breitbart.
Those numbers are absolutely devastating to the Sanders campaign.
It’s a sign that while he’s considered a frontrunner right now, he’s yet to seal the deal with voters in the Democratic primary race.
To make things worse however, Biden has yet to even formally join the race.
As a potential but not official candidate, Biden is crushing Sanders before he’s even made an announcement.
If Biden chooses to get into the race, Sanders’ position will only get much worse.
While the two seem to be at odds with one another, Biden and Sanders have similar bases due to their high name ID.
Biden pulls support from Sanders, and states like South Carolina show that he has the potential to completely knock Sanders off of the leaderboard, potentially setting Biden up to take the Democratic nomination.
The end result is that Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign is hanging on by a thread, and polls like this show just how weak his position really is, even while the media and political pundits hail him as the frontrunner.
