Chuck Schumer is not used to losing.
But Schumer just suffered a major setback.
And Chuck Schumer did a double-take when he found out who just betrayed him.
Democrats hoped to trap Republicans with legislation to create an independent commission to investigate the events of January 6.
But after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell came out against the commission saying it would be a political exercise to make Donald Trump the centerpiece of the 2022 midterm election, the overwhelming bulk of GOP Senators opposed the January 6 commission legislation.
“So what would [the Jan. 6] report be about? I think that’s a part of this recommendation by the Democrats, is that they would like to continue to debate things that occurred in the past. They’d like to continue to litigate the former president into the future. We think, the American people, going forward, and in the fall of ‘22, ought to focus on what this administration is doing to the country. And what the clear choice is that we have made to oppose most of these initiatives. So, I think this is a purely political exercise and adds nothing to the sum total of information. It doesn’t allow anyone to get away with anything. All of the aspects of it are being dealt with in one way or another, already.” Punchbowl News reported McConnell saying.
McConnell’s opposition all but guaranteed that Democrats could not pry ten Republican votes to break a filibuster.
Democrats still had one more path open to them to pass the commission legislation.
But that hinged on West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin agreeing to trigger the nuclear option and vote to eliminate the filibuster.
However, Manchin refused to budge off his opposition to abolishing the filibuster.
“Joe Manchin says he would NOT be willing to nuke the filibuster even if Republicans use it to block the Jan. 6 commission. “I can’t take the fallout,” he told us, laughing loudly,” Forbes reporter Andrew Solender posted on social media.
Democrats already pushed the January 6 Commission legislation through the house.
Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republicans oppose the bill believing it to be a trap set by the Democrats.
If Republicans voted to create the commission that would defang Republican attacks that Democrats weaponized the committee’s final report when it formed the basis of Democrat attack ads in the 2022 midterms.
Manchin’s frustrated Democrats by standing by the filibuster.
Bills that would grant amnesty for illegal aliens, create universal mail-in voting and effectively eliminate state voter ID laws, a national gun registration database, and a give away to union bosses that would threaten the livelihoods of Americans that work as independent contractors are dying on the vine in the Senate thanks to GOP filibusters.
Chuck Schumer’s promised a vote on the January 6 commission bill.
But it’s very likely that the January 6 commission legislation is the latest Democrat priority to fail in the Senate because there is no broad, bipartisan support.
