Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had no idea what he was in for.
Schumer thought this was just a normal fight with Donald Trump.
But Chuck Schumer knew he made the biggest mistake of his life the second these words left his mouth.
Donald Trump has deemed the situation on the Southern border an invasion.
In the last two months, Border Patrol has apprehended over 100,000 illegal aliens trying to pour over the Southern border.
Government officials estimate over one million illegal aliens will be arrested at the Southern border this year.
These levels of illegal alien migration have not been seen in more than ten years.
Customs and Border Patrol’s detention and holding facilities were not designed to handle this level of illegal immigration.
As a result, the Trump administration asked Congress for $4.5 billion in emergency funding to provide the resources necessary for the border patrol to detain and process the illegal aliens.
But Chuck Schumer doesn’t agree.
Schumer rejected out of hand the administration’s request for more money to help Border Patrol deal with the illegal alien invasion.
But Schumer did not just disagree with President Trump’s proposed solution.
The New York Democrat pushed the lie that President Trump “fabricated” a crisis on the Southern border.
“It’s almost as if the president is intentionally trying to add fuel to the fire, to fabricate a crisis, to have a justification for an emergency declaration he made months ago,” Schumer falsely claimed.
Few Americans agree with Chuck Schumer’s claim.
Most fair-minded Americans would call over one million illegal aliens stopped at the border in just one year a crisis – especially since Democrat-supported laws means they are released into the country.
The Trump administration has taken a series of steps to stem the migrant tide.
They tried altering asylum rules so that only migrants at legal points of entry could request asylum.
Administration officials worked out a deal with Mexico to have illegal aliens wait in Mexico for their asylum claims to be adjudicated.
But every time Trump takes action, the Democrats reject any legislative negotiations and instead rush to the nearest Obama judge to file a lawsuit which invariably ends in a nationwide injunction blocking the policy.
While many Americans disagree with that obstructionist approach, Schumer falsely accusing the President of “fabricating” a crisis on the Southern border is something else entirely.
That is a complete detachment from reality.
And if the Democrats head into 2020 with their party message being that 100,000 illegal aliens trying to sneak into the United States each month is just the new normal, they could pay the price at the ballot box.
The voters that abandoned the Democrat Party did so because the left stopped representing them culturally.
Schumer’s comments show the Democrat Party has not learned this lesson of 2016.
And they could be doomed to repeat it in 2020.
