Chuck Schumer and the Democrats were blindsided.
Their hopes of retaking the Senate just took a dramatic turn for the worse.
And Chuck Schumer realized defeat was at hand when this extramarital affair took an ugly turn.
Democrat challenger Cal Cunningham’s Senate campaign in North Carolina continues to implode.
Leaked text messages show Cunningham – who is a Lt. Colonel in the Army reserves – allegedly carried on an affair with medical marijuana lobbyist Arlene Guzman Todd.
To make matters worse, Guzman Todd’s husband Jeremy was a fellow veteran and new text messages show Cunningham mocking Todd for his depression and suicidal thoughts.
The National File exclusively reports:
In text messages, Arlene Guzman Todd tells her friend that her husband Jeremy Todd “was all suicidal and shit a couple of nights ago” and “Had a gun out.” Guzman Todd added, “I could not be bothered.”
Guzman Todd then said that Cunningham mocked the potential suicide situation by telling her, “You’re going to be the best therapist ever at this rate. Sorry you’re having to deal with it.”
“My wife carried me through. She is really the superhero in all this. The wives are the unsung heroes of the military, the spouses that deal with everything. Without good wives and family, I don’t think soldiers would be successful in their missions and everything they do,” Todd praised his wife her kindness and caring that Cunningham did not exhibit.
The Army Reserves is investigating Cunningham for carrying on this affair to determine if Cunningham broke Army regulations by holding and rendezvous with Guzman Todd while he was on duty or training.
North Carolina is a must-win Senate seat for both parties.
The path to a Senate majority significantly narrows for whichever party loses this race.
Prior to the bombshell revelations of Cunningham’s alleged affair the race leaned in the Democrats’ favor.
Cunningham outraised Tillis by significant amounts of money and held a lead in the polls as Tillis could not unite the Republican base behind him because of his moderate positions on issues like his support for amnesty.
While there has been no public polling released in the wake of this scandal, Democrats are clearly running scared and Cunningham hid for days and even canceled a public town hall event.
Cunningham eventually sat for a call with reporters which turned into an epic disaster.
Reporters pressed Cunningham four different times if more women would step forward and allege having affairs with him.
And four times Cunningham dodged the question.
That non-answer did not inspire great hope among Democrats that Cunningham would be able to put this scandal behind him in the final weeks of the campaign.
