Chuck Schumer found himself in hot water.
It was all entirely of his own making.
Chuck Schumer used one word that proved this terrible truth.
During a podcast interview Chuck Schumer referred to “retarded children” when discussing the New York City housing policy.
“When I first was an assemblyman, they wanted to build a congregate living place for retarded children — the whole neighborhood was against it,” Schumer stated,
“These are harmless kids. They just needed some help,” Schumer added that “We got it done. Took a while.”
This word fell out of favor long ago and Americans now use much gentler language to describe developmentally challenged individuals.
A Schumer spokesman quickly apologized on the Senator’s behalf.
“For decades, Sen. Schumer has been an ardent champion for enlightened policy and full funding of services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” a Schumer spokesman wrote. “He is sincerely sorry for his use of the outdated and hurtful language.”
But the real story was the corporate media’s coverage.
The leftwing political gossip site POLITICO reported Schumer used an “outmoded” phrase.
“Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer used an outmoded word to refer to developmentally disabled children during a recent podcast appearance.” a POLITICO social media advisor posted.
Media critics Mollie Hemmingway of The Federalist pointed out that because Schumer is a Democrat the media pulled their punches in service of protecting an ideological ally.
“The privilege of being a Democrat who is useful to the left’s agenda is that the propaganda press don’t destroy you when you do stuff like this. Not a slur worthy of cancellation — just an “outmoded word.” So nice for him!” Hemmingway wrote.
Had Donald Trump or a prominent Republican member of Congress used such a word it would have led CNN and MSNBC all day and outlets like POLITICO would have described the term as “hateful” or “bigoted.”
The corporate media was always filled with partisan Democrat activists.
Calling out liberal bias is not a new phenomena on the right.
But one of the consequences of the Trump Presidency was Americans losing faith in the press because so-called “journalists” dropped all pretenses of being fair and just declared themselves collaborators with the Democrat Party in pursuit of driving Donald Trump from office.
Political activism by the corporate media on behalf of the Democrat Party crippled the public’s trust in the media.
Polls showed less than 10 percent of Republicans had faith the press.
Rather than assessing the situation and trying to win back the trust of half the country the lesson the media took from the Trump years was to double down on acting as propaganda agents for the Democrat Party.
