Barack Obama is desperate to get Trump out of the White House.
But he’s in for a rude awakening.
Donald Trump just blew up Barack Obama’s biggest lie with this question.
America was stunned to watch Donald Trump defeat Hillary Clinton on election night in 2016.
And no one was more stunned than President Barack Obama.
The outgoing President was sure that Hillary Clinton would succeed him.
And he couldn’t bear to watch Donald Trump defeat his chosen successor on live television.
Since then, Obama has had to watch helplessly as President Trump has systematically erased much of his legacy from his time in office.
And if Trump gets re-elected to another term in 2020, he could wipe out Obama’s entire legacy by the time he leaves office.
Obama is determined to see Trump lose re-election in order to protect his own record from destruction.
But none of this matters to him unless Democrats can also retake the Senate as well, giving them control of all three major institutions in Washington D.C., alongside the House of Representatives.
So Obama has been trying to recruit candidates across the country to run for Senate as Democrats in 2020.
But Trump is now blowing up Obama’s big lie about retaking the Senate with a single question: How?
Democrats have effectively no path to retaking control of the Senate next year, something which Obama isn’t fond of talking about when trying to recruit candidates to run.
But it’s stopping many Democrats from throwing their hat into the ring.
Top tier Democratic recruits in states like Texas, Georgia, Iowa, and elsewhere are passing on a Senate run in 2020 because they don’t see a path to victory.
And that’s damaging Obama’s chances of seeing the Senate flip back to Democratic control.
Politico reports, “Senate Democrats’ bid to take back the majority is running into a big roadblock: Some of their most coveted recruiting targets are refusing to run.”
“After straining to defend seats in bright-red states in 2018, Democrats are focused on picking off Republicans to claim the Senate majority in 2020. But, so far, a number of the party’s high-profile recruits have said no to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the party’s campaign arm.”
There seems to be little to no motivation for Democrats to run for Senate either, regardless of what Obama is trying to tell them.
“The Senate is not an appealing place for smart, talented candidates because it’s a broken institution. And Democrats have not yet offered a vision for how to fix it, aside from wringing their hands and wishing things were different,” said Adam Jentleson, a longtime aide to former Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “What’s the pitch? ‘Come here, do nothing and let Mitch McConnell eat your lunch every day?’”
With a pitch like this, it’s not surprising to see so many potentially strong Democratic candidates passing on a run.
And this means that Obama’s road to defending his record from his time in office just got more difficult.
Do you think Democrats will fail to retake the Senate in 2020?
