Right now polls show Joe Biden leading President Trump heading into the Republican National Convention.
But Democrats may be headed into a disaster they never saw coming.
Donald Trump has this secret weapon in 2020 that is bad news for Joe Biden.
Joe Biden won the Democrat nomination on the strength of his support with black voters.
But not all black voters stood behind his candidacy.
It was older black voters that propelled Biden to the nomination.
Now a brand new poll from American University’s Swing Black Voter Project finds that Black voters under the age of 30 are cool to Biden and open to a Trump second term.
“In surveys and follow-up focus groups, researchers are trying to understand the hows and whys of Black voters’ patterns. The early data suggests Black voters under the age of 30 are not only lukewarm on Biden, but they are less willing to see President Donald Trump as a racist, are more open to a second Trump term and — like many young people across the country — are distrustful of institutions that are the cornerstones of our society,” Time Magazine reported.
The survey also found that 47 percent of black voters under the age of 30 would back Biden and that number rose to 73 percent if he picked a black running mate.
But 81 percent of black voters age 30 to 59 and 92 percent of black voters over the age of 60 would support Biden if he picked a black running mate.
The survey also found that black voters under the age of 30 held conservative views on abortion and homosexual marriage.
Black men under the age of 30 also were attracted to Trump’s anti-establishment message and image of strength.
“The vast majority of them aren’t going to vote for him and think he’s a racist. But about 30% of our respondents under 30 — and a higher percentage of men — like the way Trump projects strength and defies the Establishment,” American University professor of government David C. Barker told Time magazine.
Democrats cannot afford any drop off in support from black voters.
If 2016 black voters did not turnout at the same levels in 2012, and that helped Donald Trump win Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as Democrats did not run up big enough margins in Detroit, Philadelphia and Milwaukee.
This is the second poll to show Joe Biden having problems mobilizing minority voters.
After Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running mate a CNN poll found a 21 point swing in nonwhite voters away from Joe Biden.
Joe Biden may lead in the polls.
But his support may be softer than many Democrats and the fake news media think.
