Donald Trump has led the Republican Party since announcing his campaign for President in June 2015.
But Trump just got some bad news on that front.
Donald Trump lost a vote to the one Republican that left him speechless.
Poll after poll shows that Donald Trump is the most popular Republican with the party’s voters, and that if Trump runs for President in 2024 Trump enters the race of the prohibitive favorite to secure the nomination.
But that aura of inevitability suffered its first blow.
At the 2021 Western Conservative Summit approval straw poll Florida Governor Ron DeSantis actually edged out Donald Trump for the top spot.
- Ron DeSantis – 74.12%
- Donald Trump – 71.43%
- Ted Cruz – 42.86%
- Mike Pompeo – 39.35%
- Tim Scott 35.58%
This poll was not a presidential preference poll so no one knows who the attendees would say is their number one choice for President.
And this is just a political conference straw poll which means the attendees may not be representative of the broader Republican Party electorate.
But it was the first time a poll of any kind showed a Republican more popular than Donald Trump.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis owes his political career to Donald Trump.
DeSantis ran for Governor of Florida in 2018 after serving in Congress as a member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Trump saw DeSantis regularly defend Trump from the Russian collusion hoax on Fox News and endorsed DeSantis when establishment Republicans begged Trump to stay out of the race to clear a path for their handpicked candidate.
Overnight DeSantis shot from the bottom of the polls to first place and never looked back wining the gubernatorial election in large part thanks to Trump’s support and popularity in Florida.
One memorable DeSantis campaign commercial showed DeSantis teaching his children to build a border wall with Lego blocks.
But it was DeSantis’ reaction to the COVID outbreak that caused his star to explode within the Republican Party.
After a brief lockdown that DeSantis admitted he regretted DeSantis kept Florida’s economy open and never imposed a mask mandate.
DeSantis bragged that under his leadership Florida embraced freedom over Fauci-ism and the numbers backed up DeSantis’ approach as the state’s hospitals never got overwhelmed.
Florida also performed better in terms of public health and economic measures than big population blue states like California and New York that imposed harsh lockdowns and strict mask mandates.
The corporate media which pushed the COVID lockdown hysteria and committed to mask mandates with religious fervor tried to take down DeSantis with a series of lies and hoaxes.
Not only did DeSantis debunk their conspiracy theories, but he fought back against corporate media smear merchants showing he learned the big lesson from Trump’s presidency which is that Republican voters want to see their elected official’s pushback against pro-Democrat propagandists in the media.
DeSantis’ fighting posture as well as his success in proving lockdowns and mask mandates elevated him in the eyes of GOP voters to one of the top 2024 Presidential prospects.
