Riots have ravaged Minneapolis destroying the buildings and businesses.
Ilhan Omar had the chance to try and stop the destruction.
Instead, she delivered an unbelievable support of violence while her city burned.
Every instance where a police officer abuses his power should be treated with the utmost importance.
The viral video with a police officer placing his knee against George Floyd’s neck is horrifying to watch, he later died.
African Americans have the right to demand justice for George Floyd’s death.
People of every race have spoken out against his death and they should.
Derek Chauvin – the officer who was videotaped with his knee against George Floyd’s neck – has been arrested and charged with murder.
There should be investigations, there should be justice, administered after a thorough and unbiased investigation by the judicial system, and that’s what the majority of Americans should want.
Rioting isn’t a solution.
The rioters are causing mounting injustices against minorities.
In Minneapolis a black firefighter, Korboi Balla saw his life-savings destroyed by looters when they burnt down the sports bar he had been planning on opening down to a pile of bricks.
“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Korboi Balla said to CBS News. “It hurts, man. It’s not fair, it’s not right. We’ve been working so hard for this place. It’s not just for me, it’s for my family.”
Burning down Korboi Balla’s bar doesn’t bring justice to George Floyd.
With tens of millions of people out of work because of the coronavirus shutdowns, it makes it easier for Americans to turn toward violence as a solution when their entire lives have been stripped away from them by stay-at-home orders from their governors.
The senseless violence is heartbreaking. The destruction is heartbreaking.
Ilhan Omar took to Twitter condemning the police that were trying to contain the riots.
“Shooting rubber bullets and tear gas at unarmed protesters when there are children present should never be tolerated. Ever. What is happening tonight in our city is shameful. Police need to exercise restraint, and our community needs space to heal.” Omar wrote on Twitter.
“Our anger is just. Our anger is warranted. And our priority right now must be protecting one another,” Omar continued. “Violence only begets violence. More force is only going to lead to more lives lost and more devastation. We must prioritize the safety of our community. We can rebuild, but we cannot bring back lives.”
After she received backlash from her comments Omar said “We should and must protest peacefully. But let us end the cycle of violence now.”
Mob justice is never justice and it is irresponsible of Rep. Ilhan Omar to stoke up anger.
Anger that is destructive to livelihoods and putting people in danger is not justified.
The riots have sparked in several cities around the country.
Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin have activated their state national guards in response.
America needs leadership at the moment that looks for justice and peace.
