Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar never expected to be in this position.
Omar is fighting for her political career as scandal and backlash against her radical beliefs threaten to take her down.
Now Ilhan Omar got hit with last minute surprise that could kick her out of Congress.
National Democrats have had enough of Ilhan Omar’s antics.
Omar’s racism, radicalism and scandal plagued personal life created a perfect storm that left her vulnerable to a primary challenge.
Anton Melton-Meaux is an attorney challenging Omar in the primary and already demonstrated a serious campaign by out-raising Omar during a previous fundraising quarter.
Melton-Meaux attracted support from across the country because of Omar’s continued racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
The latest blow to Omar’s campaign came when the Minneapolis Star Tribune endorsed Melton-Meaux.
In the endorsement editorial the Star Tribune cited Omar’s ideological entrenchment on two unpopular policies –defunding the police and a communist government takeover of health care – as a central reason why voters should out Omar from Congress.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote:
On law enforcement, Melton-Meaux told the Editorial Board regarding the death of George Floyd: “I’ve had my own issues with police, even being detained as a law student by two white officers. I know that could have been a knee on my neck but for a few circumstances.” But instead of Omar’s calls to defund and even dismantle the police, Melton-Meaux would work to create a system in which police are held accountable for their actions.
On health care, Omar and Melton-Meaux both support universal coverage. How they get there differs. Omar supports the purist proposal championed by Sen. Bernie Sanders that would dramatically shift the entire system to the federal government. Melton-Meaux more pragmatically builds on the Affordable Care Act by embracing the logical next step, a public option that would offer a government-run insurance program for consumers to voluntarily choose.
Newspaper endorsements are normally not a big deal.
Republican primary voters reject them out of hand because left-wing newspaper editorial boards always endorse RINOs and Never Trump traitors.
But liberal voters read these outlets and could look for cues on who to support based on who the paper endorses.
Donald Trump also wants to argue that a mentally diminished Joe Biden will be a figurehead President while radicals like Ilhan Omar dictate policy.
If Anton Melton-Meaux defeats Ilhan Omar Democrats hope it will soften the blow of that attack.
