Minneapolis made the move to disband their entire police force.
What Seattle is doing is almost just as bad.
Ilhan Omar shouted for joy when she heard what Seattle did to their police.
Having a protest is a protected First Amendment right but the Capitol Hill Organized Protest, or Chop for short, is inherently undemocratic.
At first the protesters who took over the six city blocks in Seattle were claiming that they were trying to set up an autonomous country, but under legal challenges they changed their name to be an organized protest.
If the protesters wanted to set up a commune in the middle of nowhere and live by their own rules this wouldn’t be a problem but they’re imposing a new rule of law on residents who didn’t ask for protesters to take over their neighborhood.
The police are only going to go in to CHOP if there are life threatening situations Seattle’s mayor said.
In the deal struck with the protesters the size of CHOP was decreased but the city helped replace CHOP unsound barricades with concrete barriers, the protesters have already broken their side of the deal.
They’ve basically rolled over and given the protesters what they want, worse than that, they’re tying the police’s hands to deal with them.
A business owner near the perimeter of CHOP called 911 more than a dozen times saying that someone broke in, stole money and tried to set his building on fire.
“The officers responded to the call and they observed the location from a distance. They did not see any signs of smoke or fire or anything else and they did not see a disturbance,” Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said.
Looking at a location from a distance is not an adequate police response.
The Seattle City Council has also made the move to ban the police from using crowd control measures like tear gas and pepper.
“The voting comes after the Seattle Police Department used tear gas to disperse mostly peaceful demonstrators protesting racism and police brutality in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died last month in the custody of a white police officer.” Fox News reported.
While measures should be taken to protect peaceful protesters, many of the protests following the death of George Floyd were not peaceful and several people died because of the protesters and Minneapolis alone sustained half a billion dollars in damage.
If the Seattle police had taken steps to clear out the protesters when they started illegally erecting barricades instead of allowing the protesters to take over parts of their city it would have been better for everyone.
Police shouldn’t use tear gas on peaceful protests but the Seattle City Council just took all crowd control measures away from the police.
What do they expect to happen next time there’s a violent riot?
