The media is going wild.
Is this something Americans should be worried about?
Is this new app really “a threat to democracy?”
America is truly politically divided.
Nothing has proven that more than this past election.
And now a new app has emerged that has CNN reporter Pamela Brown suggesting it may topple politics in America as we know it.
The app in question is called Parler and is a social media platform that is similar to Facebook.
Since the result of the Presidential election, conservatives and far-right voters have flocked to the site, leaving Facebook and Twitter in the dust.
They feel it is a safer space for them to share their ideas rather than Facebook or Twitter.
An increasing amount of Trump supporters no longer feel safe or welcomed onto those platforms due to the overwhelming amount of Biden supporters and left-wing liberals.
CNN reporter Brian Stelter shared how he believes this app is affecting the political sphere and especially right-wing conservatives:
“I think, big picture, Pamela, here is the concerning trend line here. People are going more and more into their own echo chambers, more into their own bubbles, especially Trump voters. There’s this new social media app, called Parler, getting a lot of attention. Because conservatives are leaving, saying they’re leaving Twitter and Facebook, going off to Parler because they believe Parler is a safer space for them. What we’re seeing is even more of a bunker mentality in right-wing media. Ultimately, that’s not good for the country.”
“No, it is not good,” Brown responded. “It is a threat to democracy that these people are in echo chambers and they’re getting fed a diet of lies essentially.”
The main point of their discussion is that Trump supporters are retreating to their own sphere.
But what they did not consider was the widespread hatred and venom directed towards those who support Trump.
The internet is extremely hostile to those who are not “politically correct” or who believe differently than the majority.
In some cases, that is a good thing.
Extremist beliefs and actions should not be tolerated.
But when the environment becomes hostile to everyone who believes differently, no growth can occur on either side.
Trump supporters and right-wing conservatives are fleeing the toxic environments that Facebook and Twitter have created.
And those social media giants have only encouraged this.
By actively preventing the spread of negative news reports against Biden and taking accounts away from people who disagree with Biden, it is no wonder people are leaving.
Facebook and Twitter can no longer claim they allow free speech due to their massive censoring campaigns and coverups.
America is already extremely divided and nowhere more so than in politics.
This app may not be a “threat to democracy,” but it is a concerning illustration of the deepening divide between Americans.
