Donald Trump’s suing Big Tech for banning him.
Now Trump got a boost from an unexpected source.
And Jen Psaki made an admission that may come back to bite Biden at the Supreme Court.
The Biden administration announced it began pressuring Facebook to take down posts on social media that the administration deemed misinformation about the coronavirus vaccines.
Some Americans refuse to take the vaccine for a variety of reasons, but the Biden administration believes social media censorship will lessen vaccine hesitancy.
At a recent White House press briefing press secretary Jen Psaki defended the administration’s demand for Facebook to censor speech the administration flagged.
“So we’re regularly making sure social media platforms are aware of the latest narratives, dangerous to public health that we and many other Americans are seeing across all of social and traditional media. And we work to engage with them to better understand the enforcement of social media platform policies.” Psaki stated.
Psaki claimed vaccine misinformation is too dangerous for Americans to read so the administration had every right to lean on Facebook to censor speech.
“As you all know information travels quite quickly. If it’s up there for days and days and days, when people see it, you know, there’s, it’s hard to put that back in a box, and of course promoting quality information algorithms, I don’t know how they work, but they all do know how they work.” Psaki explained.
The press secretary also declared that the tech platforms should coordinate and if one site bans an individual every social media company should ban that individual.
Psaki’s comments horrified conservatives on one hand, and on the other hand some thought it bolstered Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Big Tech for banning his accounts.
Utah Senator Mike Lee told Fox News that if social media companies censor speech at the request of the federal government social media platforms are no longer private entities.
“The government can’t censor speech. The First Amendment makes that very clear. They’re a private for-profit corporation that can make its own decisions but when it’s doing it with collusion in government it looks to me a lot like a First Amendment violation.” Senator Lee stated.
In Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Big Tech, Trump’s lawyers argued the social platforms that banned Trump were state actors.
When Trump filed the lawsuit legal experts on cable news and on social media mocked that argument.
But Trump’s lawyers could use Jen Psaki’s admission that the administration insisted Facebook censor speech as evidence that Facebook is a state actor.
After Facebook and Twitter censored true stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop last October the Biden administration thought they could get away with anything in terms of forcing social medica platforms to suppress speech.
But Trump’s lawsuit and Psaki admitting the administration squeezed Facebook to take down posts about the coronavirus vaccine could scramble that calculus.
