Joe Biden is leading in the polls and Democrats believed Biden could put his campaign on cruise control until arriving in the winner’s circle on Election Day.
But now all hell is breaking loose.
And that’s because Joe Biden got smacked with a 2020 reality check that is bad news for Democrats.
The past several weeks have provided a bushel of good news for Joe Biden.
Polls show him leading President Trump in national and key battleground state polls.
But the positive headlines came to a screeching halt when Michigan Congressman Justin Amash declared he was forming an exploratory committee to seek the Libertarian Party nomination for President.
“Today, I launched an exploratory committee to seek the @LPNational’s nomination for president of the United States. Americans are ready for practical approaches based in humility and trust of the people.” Amash added. “We’re ready for a presidency that will restore respect for our Constitution and bring people together. I’m excited and honored to be taking these first steps toward serving Americans of every background as president.”
Democrats and Never Trumpers panicked.
Never Trump RINO Sarah Longwell wrote on the left-wing site The Bulwark that a slice of voters choosing third party candidates in 2016 helped Donald Trump carry key swing states.
Longwell wrote:
Take a look at the increase in vote total among center-right, third party candidates (Gary Johnson / Evan McMullin / Constitution Party) plus write-ins in the three key upper Midwest states in 2016 over 2012:
- Pennsylvania: 135,170 more votes; Trump won by 44,292 votes
- Wisconsin: 123,447 more votes; Trump won by 22,748
- Michigan: 165,214 more votes; Trump won by 10,704
Amash hails from Michigan’s Third Congressional District.
Last year Democrats and the fake news media celebrated Amash as the last honest man of principle in the Republican Party after Amash left the GOP after announcing his intention to support articles of impeachment against President Trump.
Some election forecasters like Nate Silver believe it is not a given that Amash will take votes away from Biden.
“Feels like the conventional wisdom will be “actually, Amash running is good for Trump” when it might be but probably won’t be.” Silver added. “On a basic level the obvious takes are 1) it won’t matter much 2) to the extent it does, Amash is conservative and Trump sort-of-is also, albeit in very different ways, so that’s not great for Trump. But there will be lots of overthinking based on relatively little evidence.”
But the ferocity of the reaction by some Democrats and many Never Trump Republicans leads political insiders to agree with the idea that Amash will provide safe harbor for some slice of voters that do not approve of President Trump but cannot bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.
And that could be the margin of victory for the President in 2020.
