It’s only been a week, but things are not looking up.
Now, Joe Biden sets aside claims of “unity” to reveal his true colors.
In his Inaugural Address, Biden stated:
“[T]o restore the soul and to secure the future of America – requires more than words. It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: Unity. Unity.”
He continuously harped on the importance of unity as a country if we are to heal from what has been a truly trying year.
However, it appears he has already started to take back his words when it comes to former President Trump.
Despite him no longer holding the office, House impeachment officers offered the articles of impeachment on Monday.
Thus, Trump’s impeachment trial is still going forward.
And Biden supports it.
CNN released Biden’s comments about backing Trump’s trial:
Biden made the comment during a brief one-on-one interview with CNN in the halls of the West Wing. He acknowledged the effect it could have on his legislative agenda and Cabinet nominees but said there would be “a worse effect if it didn’t happen.”
Biden told CNN he believed the outcome would be different if Trump had six months left in his term, but said he doesn’t think 17 Republican senators will vote to convict Trump.”
Many Republican senators strongly oppose this trial, stating that there is not enough evidence or reason to go forward with it, especially now that Trump is no longer in office.
Senator Rand Paul tweeted:
“I object to this unconstitutional sham of an “impeachment” trial and I will force a vote on whether the Senate can hold a trial of a private citizen.”
And the senators are not the only ones who believe this trial to be unnecessary.
Mollie Hemingway – a conservative author and political commentator – tweeted:
“On Special Report, @SenTomCotton says a Senate impeachment trial of a private citizen is beyond the Constitution’s authority.”
Now that Trump is out of office, this trial will do more harm than good; it will divert the Senate’s time away from helping coronavirus relief, take up valuable time and resources, and may not truly amount to anything substantial.
In the end, the only reason the trial is moving forward is for show.
If President Biden is attempting to unite the American people, he cannot start with a plan that will inevitably spark more dissonance among the people.
We can only hope that this trial is called off and the American people and the American government can focus on Biden’s hope for unity.
