Republicans knew they would have to worry.
But these new executive orders are truly a cause for concern.
Now, Joe Biden signed one change to voting that has every Republican worried about 2022.
This past Sunday, President Joe Biden released an executive order to expand the federal government’s role in voter registration.
He stated that this move was in response to the “insurrection” at the Capitol on January 6th.
He released a pre-recorded video on Sunday with a message about the executive order.
The video recording aired at the Martin and Coretta King Unity Breakfast on the commemoration of the anniversary of Bloody Sunday.
“[W]e have seen an unprecedented insurrection in our Capitol and a brutal attack on our democracy on January 6th. A never before seen effort to ignore, undermine, and undo the will of the people. In 2020, our very democracy on the line, even in the midst of a pandemic, more Americans voted than ever before.”
Additionally, he claimed that the Republicans were preparing an “all-out assault,” against voters, intending to pass more than 250 bills to tighten restrictions on who could vote in a bid to secure more future elections.
Many of the proposed laws include voter ID, the right for electoral observers to be physically present during ballot counting and requiring a judge to be assigned promptly to election lawsuits.
President Biden stated that these measures would make it much more difficult for Americans to vote, thus obstructing the workings of democracy.
In response, he stated:
“We cannot let them succeed.”
The executive order itself will require the federal government agency to use its resources to make sure everyone has access to and information about voter registration.
This will require the use of their websites and social media.
The order reads:
“It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to expand access to, and education about, voter registration and election information, and to combat misinformation, in order to enable all eligible Americans to participate in our democracy.”
In addition, the order would also require federal agencies to look for ways to allow more federal workers to have leave from work to vote or to volunteer as poll workers.
President Biden believes that these measures will make sure that all eligible Americans have access to the information they need to make informed political decisions, but also the ability to make their voices heard.
“Every eligible voter should be able to vote and have that vote counted. If you have the best ideas, you have nothing to hide. Let the people vote.”
Whether or not these new orders will accomplish that dream remains to be seen.
