Joe Biden’s selection process for his running mate is reaching its final stages.
Given the former Vice President’s declining mental state who he picks to fill out the ticket could be the most consequential in recent American political history.
And now Joe Biden told Fox News something surprising about his VP selection.
Joe Biden was initially supposed to select his running mate by August 1.
That deadline came and went.
Then it leaked out that Biden would pick his Vice Presidential nominee by the first week of August.
That date also passed without any announcement.
Some pundits attribute this to the fact that Biden pledged to pick a woman and after the Black Lives Matter riots boxed him in to picking a black woman the field narrowed to a group of unpalatable options including California Senator Kamala Harris, California Congresswoman Karen Bass and former Barack Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
None of the three are home runs – Harris is unlikeable, Bass is a communist and Rice is an unqualified liar – which may have extended deliberations.
But with the Democrat National Convention set to kick off on August 17 Biden must make a decision soon.
Fox News Channel’s Peter Doocey is the network’s embedded reporter on the Biden campaign.
Doocey was reporting on the campaign when Biden rode by on a bike at which point Doocey shouted a question about Biden picking a running mate,
“Mr. Vice President have you picked a running mate yet?” Doocey asked.
“Yeah I have,” Biden responded.
When Doocey followed up by asking Biden who he selected Biden yelled back “You!”
Doocey later reported the first part of Biden’s answer – that he had selected a running mate – as a breaking development in the campaign.
But Biden campaign press secretary TJ Ducklo shot that down on social media.
“Folks, this is clearly a joke. When Vice President Biden has made a decision on who his running mate will be, he will let the American people know. And can confirm, it’s not @pdoocy of @FoxNews,” Ducklo tweeted.
Biden’s number one choice for Vice President is far and away former First Lady Michelle Obama.
But that is not a realistic proposition as Obama would never accept the position.
That left Biden to choose from a selection of also rans.
Biden and his campaign are wagering on the fact that the former Vice President leads in the polls and voters traditionally do not base their presidential vote on the running mate’s identity or resume.
However given the fact that at 78 years of age and in clearly declining mental capacity, Biden’s Vice President may assume power before Biden’s first term is up and almost certainly will be the Democrat nominee in 2024 as few expect a potential President Biden to run for re-election.
And that could push voters to decide on voting for or against Biden based on what they think of his running mate.
