Joe Biden is careening from one failure to another.
Even Biden’s own party is turning against him.
And Joe Biden waved the white flag of surrender in the face of this stunning rejection.
Joe Biden and the Democrats are still struggling to find their footing following the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
Democrats initially thought the court striking down Roe would generate a voter backlash against Republicans.
This never materialized as polls show the economy and inflation are the top issue for voters as it looks like America is about to hit a nasty recession.
Polls also show Democrats face a serious enthusiasm gap with Republicans heading into the midterm election.
Joe Biden tried to change that dynamic by announcing his support for eliminating the legislative filibuster to ram legislation through Congress that impose abortion on demand with no restrictions up until the moment of birth on all 50 states.
“I believe we have to codify Roe v. Wade in the law, and the way to do that is to make sure the Congress votes to do that,” Biden told reporters. “And if the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights; it should be — we provide an exception for this.”
Biden’s announcement won him praise from the socialist left.
“Now we’re talking,” New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez exclaimed. “Time for people to see a real, forceful push for it. Use the bully pulpit. We need more.”
But just one day later Joe Biden backed down and admitted there were not the votes in the Senate to trigger the nuclear option and wipeout the filibuster.
Biden said Democrats needed two more votes in the Senate to overcome oppositions from Democrat Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin.
“The filibuster should not stand in the way of us being able to do that, but right now we don’t have the votes in the Senate to change the filibuster,” Biden declared. “That means we need two more votes.”
After Biden called for an end to the filibuster Senator Sinema’s office put out a statement reiterating that Sinema opposed changing the filibuster rules.
“Senator Sinema’s position on the filibuster has not changed,” a statement from Sinema’s office read.
But in truth, Biden is still lying to Democrats.
More Democrats than just Senators Sinema and Manchin oppose eliminating the filibuster but these other Democrats can keep their support for the filibuster quiet and let Manchin and Sinema take all the heat.
Biden is making another mistake trying to put the filibuster on the ballot this November.
Instead of juicing turnout of Democrat voters, Biden supporting gutting the filibuster is likely to alienate swing votes and hurt Democrats in states like Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia.
