Former National Security Advisor John Bolton declared war on Donald Trump.
In the final days of the Senate impeachment trial the contents of Bolton’s upcoming book leaked to the New York Times in an 11th hour bid to boost the Democrats’ chances of removing the President from office.
But John Bolton just got some really bad news. Here is the legal punishment he faces.
Last Sunday the New York Times published a bombshell story about the supposed contents of Bolton’s forthcoming book entitled “The Room Where It Happened.”
In the Times story, Bolton’s book claims the President told him the freeze on Ukrainian security aid was directly linked to investigations into Joe and Hunter Biden’s corruption.
Over the next several days the Times trickled out more leaks from Bolton’s book to pressure Republicans to accept Democrats’ calls for new witnesses.
Many Trump supporters believe Bolton was behind the leaks as part of a scheme to exact revenge for the President firing Bolton in September after Bolton repeatedly leaked to the fake news media in an attempt to undermine the President’s foreign policy.
Bolton submitted his book to the National Security Council for a routine prepublication review to determine if there was any classified information in the book.
Ellen J. Knight, senior director for records, access and information security management at the National Security Council dispatched a letter to Bolton’s attorneys warning them that the book could not be published in its current form.
The letter said the manuscript contained “significant amounts of classified information.”
“Under federal law and the nondisclosure agreements your client signed as a condition for gaining access to classified information, the manuscript may not be published or otherwise disclosed without the deletion of this classified information,” Knight wrote.
Knight’s letter was dated January 23 and immediately upon receiving the letter the contents of Bolton’s book began appearing in the New York Times with the first story dated January 26.
Now Bolton must face the music for his treachery.
And that will include losing his security clearance.
Susan Crabtree of Real Clear Politics exclusively reported:
Bolton now faces the wrath of not just Trump but his legions of loyalists for volunteering to testify against the president in the impeachment trial, thus bolstering Democrats’ arguments that the president threatened Ukraine’s president with a quid pro quo over U.S. aid to extract a commitment to investigate Joe Biden and his son’s dealings in that country.
Seeing his security clearance revoked is an almost certainty for Bolton once the impeachment trial is over, according to two government officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, as well as legal experts – all of whom say Bolton could face additional fallout for his role in the impeachment drama this week.
Bolton’s gambit failed.
The Senate correctly rejected the Democrats’ demands for an endless fishing expedition.
And now Bolton will be out in the cold by possibly losing his security clearance.
