Mike Pence’s political future is on the line.
Heading into the 2020 election the Vice President stands as the individual in Washington with the most to lose or gain.
There is speculation that President Trump will name a new Vice President and Mike Pence stood in front of the press and put jaws on the ground with this decision.
Donald Trump tasked Vice President Mike Pence to head up the coronavirus task force.
As part of those duties, Pence leads a regularly scheduled press briefing to update the country on the government’s response to the spread of the Chinese coronavirus.
In one of the most recent press availabilities, the Vice President announced the President extended his travel ban to extend to foreign nationals that have been in the United Kingdom and Ireland in the last 14 days.
“Also, as the president just foreshadowed, in our task force meeting today, the president has made a decision to suspend all travel to the United Kingdom and Ireland, effective midnight, Monday night, Eastern Standard Time. Chad Wolf will describe the details of that. But again, as the president just suggested, all of our health experts presented information. Dr. Fauci will reflect on some of those numbers, made a unanimous recommendation to the president that we suspend all travel from the U.K. and Ireland. That will be effective midnight, Monday night, Eastern Standard Time. Again, Americans in the U.K. or Ireland can come home. Legal residents can come home. But as the secretary will detail, they will be funneled through specific airports and process,” Pence told the press.
Donald Trump handing Mike Pence the reigns for the coronavirus task force put the Vice President in the most high stakes position of anyone in Washington.
Pence would surely like to run for President in 2024.
But his political fortunes are now directly tied to how the government manages this outbreak.
Pence is every bit on the hook for what happens from here on out as Donald Trump.
In fact, should the response go south the President could judge that his only chance to shake up the 2020 race is to drop Pence from the ticket and replace him with someone like former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley.
But should the government contain the outbreak and limit the number of infections and deaths then Pence will have established himself a crisis tested leader and defeating him in the 2024 Republican Primary will be near impossible.
The President’s historic travel restrictions bought America time to prepare.
Vice President Pence and the rest of the coronavirus task force are trying to use that time to put in place tough mitigation and social distancing measures that will limit the damage this virus inflicts upon America by preventing a massive surge of infections.
The success of that operation will determine both President Trump and Vice President Pence’s political fate.
