Mitch McConnell has a clever plan to guarantee Democrats never control the Senate trial.
This one move has made Trump’s victory completely inevitable.
Because Mitch McConnell has a trick up his sleeve that could kill impeachment at any moment.
The Senate is about to begin the impeachment trial and as The Washington Post mournfully proclaimed, “For every Senate impeachment trial, the senators currently serving are the ones who decide how the trial will work.”
Because that means that the Republicans are the ones who are going to be setting the rules, this means the Democrats can no longer parade just their witnesses who will attack Trump.
The Democrats think it would be very bad if the same rules applied to Trump as Bill Clinton.
Nancy Pelosi would love to make impeachment into one big Democratic infomercial for 2020.
But Mitch McConnell isn’t going to allow that sort of behavior on his turf.
That’s why McConnell drafted a resolution to allow Trump’s team to demand an instant vote at any point.
According to The Daily Wire:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has reportedly created a “kill switch” for President Donald Trump’s upcoming Senate impeachment trial that would allow for the president’s legal team to either seek an immediate verdict or a dismissal of the case if the trial descends into a circus spectacle.
“I am familiar with the resolution as it stood a day or two ago,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) told Axios. “My understanding is that the resolution will give the president’s team the option to either move to judgment or to move to dismiss at a meaningful time…”
“Hawley added that in the most recent draft of the organizing resolution he saw there was an option for the president’s counsel to make a motion in multiple places, including at the beginning of the proceedings,” Axios reported. “Hawley added that if the final resolution does not allow Trump’s lawyers the option to dismiss or move to judgment at a ‘meaningful point’ in the trial, he would be ‘very, very surprised,’ and might not vote for the organizing resolution.”
Hawley told Axios that if the option to dismiss the case was not available to the Trump legal team that it would give House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) too much power over the proceedings.
The Senators already know what the evidence against Trump is and there hasn’t been a single Republican who reviewed the evidence and thought that Trump should be removed.
The only reason that impeachment is even happening is that Nancy Pelosi thought that it would be politically damaging to Trump.
If they have actual evidence of crime, they should bring it forward but they really just want another media circus.
The problem with this media circus is that it’s distracting Congress from its important duties and dividing the nation, and the sooner it is over the better.
Do you think that the impeachment trial should be short and sweet?
