There’s not a person in the nation who likes Nancy Pelosi.
Many in her party can’t stand her because they feel she’s not doing enough to get Trump impeached, and Republicans can’t stand her because she pushed the Russian meddling hoax for as long as she did.
And as rough as Pelosi’s life is now, she just got smacked in the face with a cold truth about Trump’s future.
You can bet Trump will tweet about this in the near future.
Democrats in swing districts, those who could easily lose their seat in the upcoming midterm elections, aren’t going to throw their hat in and look to get Trump impeached.
They realize that based on their tenuous position, if they were to back impeachment, it may cost them re-election.
Not only does this upset the rest of the Democrats in the House, as a majority of them back removal procedures, it also points to a future filled with Trump.
There’s no way Pelosi likes this.
Bear in mind it’s not a small number of reps who’re likely to hold out. Of the 55 Democrats in swing districts, only 13 back impeachment proceedings. And only two of the 31 House Dems in districts that elected Trump are in favor of impeachment.
While this bolsters the claim Pelosi’s been making; that impeachment isn’t popular and would be an ill-fated pursuit, it also shows how little room she has to put the squeeze on Trump.
As Pelosi noted, unless it was possible to secure 218 House votes AND 67 Senate votes needed for an impeachment to hold, there should be no attempt made to attack the President.
She’s said if Democrats were to meekly move to impeach and it failed, the entire thing could backfire on the Democrats just like what happened to Republicans back when Clinton was in office.
While this might seem well and good for Trump, the truth is he’s not out of the woods, yet.
While there is no official impeachment investigation, Democrats who form the House Judiciary Committee aren’t letting Pelosi’s hesitance stop them from mounting their own efforts to pounce.
Cristina Marcos writing for The Hill said:
“[The Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee] have been framing their months-long investigations of the Trump administration as an effort to determine whether to recommend impeachment articles. They argue an impeachment inquiry is effectively underway without taking a formal vote calling it as such.
Some vulnerable Democrats are now expressing support for the impeachment process by merely saying they back what the committee is already doing.”
Pelosi could just be biding her time, waiting for a new piece of “evidence” to fall into her lap so she can make a move against Trump…
Or, and what’s more likely the case, Pelosi realizes that she’s stuck with Trump for the next 18 months (if not the next five years) and she’d rather hold onto her seat of power and keep her party intact. She’s drunk on that power, and doesn’t want anything to happen to her position.
Yes, the cold hard truth that Trump might still be in office for a while longer probably isn’t appealing.
At the same time, Pelosi does well to have an enemy to fight against. And as long as Trump’s in office, she’s not going anywhere.
