Democrats just publicly shot down the first major push to impeach President Trump last week.
But their plans to remove Trump from office are far from over.
And now, Nancy Pelosi is plotting to bring impeachment back from the dead.
When Democrats killed a motion to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, it was commonly thought that the idea that the President would be removed from office was officially dead.
The idea was that Democrats didn’t think they had the votes to remove him in the Senate, and thus the party split on whether or not to pursue the strategy in the first place.
Which is why Texas Democrat Al Green’s impeachment resolution went down in flames.
But while Nancy Pelosi is publicly backing off of impeachment out of fear that her party will be punished in the 2020 elections if they push the issue, she seems to be privately gearing up to bring impeachment back around to the table.
The AP reports, “The House Judiciary Committee chairman said Sunday that this week’s hearing with Robert Mueller will air ‘very substantial evidence’ of wrongdoing by President Donald Trump and make a public case for impeachment. Republicans pledged sharp questioning of the special counsel about what they see as a ‘one-sided’ Russia investigation.”
The game plan for Democrats is simple.
Bring back Robert Mueller to Congress to testify to a Democrat-dominated committee and see what he says.
If he says nothing, they can attack Trump for covering up the Mueller investigation.
If he says something but doesn’t give the Democrats any new material, the Democrats at least have a few 30 second clips of Mueller speaking for them to use in campaign advertisements in 2020 against the President.
And if Mueller brings up anything new that he didn’t already cover in his investigative report to the Justice Department, suddenly Democrats would have new materials to work with if they ever wanted to bring back impeachment from the dead.
And that’s exactly what Pelosi is banking on.
It’s a win-win-win strategy for her and her party’s leadership in Washington.
Either Mueller will help her party smooth things over with the radicals who demanded impeachment and now feel betrayed by her, or Mueller actually gives Pelosi something to work with that could convince her to bring impeachment charges back to the table.
“This is a president who has violated the law 6 ways from Sunday,” said Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the Committee Chairman.
Nadler, who serves as one of Nancy Pelosi’s right-hand men, argued this week that Mueller’s investigation clearly laid the groundwork for impeaching the President.
And he wouldn’t be saying that unless he already had the green light to do so from Pelosi herself.
Which means the stage has been set for Democrats to quietly bring impeachment back in through the back door while publicly making it seem like the issue has already been settled.
