Nancy Pelosi just won another term as Speaker of the House.
But Pelosi’s tenure running Congress may be short lived.
And now Nancy Pelosi just got hit with this terrible news about her retirement.
In 2020 Republicans surprised all the experts and gained 14 seats in the House of Representatives.
All the prognosticators – including Nancy Pelosi – thought the Democrats would win between 15 and 20 seats.
Instead Democrats entered 2021 holding their narrowest majority in the house since World War 2.
Republicans need to only net six seats in the 2022 midterms to reclaim the majority and oust Pelosi as Speaker.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy exuded confidence that Republicans would win back control of the House of Representatives in next year’s midterm elections in a discussion with American Conservative Union Chair Matt Schlaap at the Conservative Political Action Conference.
In discussing the GOP’s prospects for 2022 McCarthy boasted that he is so sure the Republicans will win back that majority that “I would bet my house. My personal house. Don’t tell my wife, but I will bet it. This is the smallest majority the Democrats have had in 100 years.”
McCarthy then pivoted to asking the crowd if they wanted to “retire Nancy Pelosi” and the precarious state of the Democrat majority.
“Listen, do you want to retire Nancy Pelosi?” McCarthy exclaimed. “Do you want to end the socialism in this country? Win the House. This is the smallest majority the Democrats have had in 100 years. We could do it.”
Pelosi responded by mocking McCarthy.
“No one should be surprised the Minority Leader is willing to wager his home. McCarthy doesn’t have much to give after sacrificing his integrity trying to cancel $1400 survival checks for Americans trying to make ends meet during a deadly pandemic,” her communications director Robyn Patterson wrote in a statement.
This jab backfired as McCarthy fired back that “I still live in the first house I ever bought while Pelosi takes shots at me from one of her mansions.
Pelosi’s house also became a symbol of ridicule when during the lockdowns and millions of Americans lost their jobs Pelosi appeared in a video showing off her $24,000 refrigerator filled with $12 a pint ice cream.
If McCarthy is correct about the Republicans winning back the majority next year Pelosi may have plenty of time to spend in her house eating expensive ice cream.
Should Republicans take control of the House of Representatives it is difficult to see Pelosi remaining in Congress as a regular member.
A loss in the midterms would mean Pelosi lost the Speaker’s gavel twice and Democrats would likely look to shakeup an aging leadership team that has been place since around when Apple first debuted the Iphone.
If Democrats decide to move in another direction in 2023 it would not be surprising to see Pelosi retire from Congress.
