House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has never faced a conflict like this before.
Pelosi’s reputation as an invincible iron lady of Washington is on the line.
But the Speaker of the House may have bit off more than she could chew because Nancy Pelosi picked one fight that will end in her most embarrassing defeat ever.
Despite Democrats and the fake news media presenting the party as holding a united front heading in to the November election, looks can be deceiving.
There is a civil war brewing beneath the surface.
And Ground Zero is New York’s 16th Congressional District where powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Elliot Engel faces a fierce primary challenger from a leftist insurgent.
Elliot is not identified with the rising Bernie Sanders movement and as an older white male Engel does not appeal to the party’s devotion to identity politics.
This looms larger as hundreds of thousands of leftist foot soldiers march in the streets in the name of fighting so-called “systemic racism.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi jumped to Engel’s aid with a much needed endorsement during a press conference.
“I firmly support Eliot Engel for Congress and I support Alexandria for Congress as well,” Pelosi stated. “I think the people of New York are very blessed to have them both in the Congress.”
Pelosi’s support became necessary as Engel’s political prospects deteriorated after he was caught on a hot mic at a protest event for George Floyd’s death admitting he didn’t care and was only there because he faced a primary challenge.
“If I didn’t have a primary, I wouldn’t care,” Engel let slip.
That led to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to endorse Engel’s challenger Jamaal Brown.
“Tonight, I am endorsing @JamaalBowmanNY for Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media.
“Jamaal has dedicated the last decade of his life serving his community as a school principal and community servant…Not only is Jamaal a profound community leader, but I believe he’d make a fantastic colleague in the United States House of Representatives,” Ocasio-Cortez added.
Ocasio-Cortez and Pelosi have not butted heads since they came to an understanding on a nonaggression pact in the summer of 2018.
But now it is game on.
With polls showing Democrats could control the Presidency and Congress next year this primary could determine who controls the Congressional agenda.
If Bowman wins after Ocasio-Cortez threw her support behind him it will make clear that the energy in the party rests with the radical socialist left.
Should Engel emerge victorious Pelosi and the regular old socialist establishment will still call the shots.
And there is a lot at stake.
Pelosi and other party leaders believe Ocasio-Cortez’ agenda of a “Green New Deal” and a complete government takeover of health care can’t pass Congress and will lead to electoral ruin for Democrats.
Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t care, and if Bowman wins the primary Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of the “squad” will feel emboldened to press forward and run roughshod over Pelosi and make their radical agenda the focal point of the next Congress.
