Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer are facing a political moment of truth.
Now all hell is breaking loose.
And that’s because Nancy Pelosi received this major ultimatum that every Democrat feared.
Democrats are trying to navigate narrow majorities in the House and Senate to ram Joe Biden’s proposed trillions of dollars in welfare state and Green New Deal spending into law.
Key to the scheme is passing a bipartisan infrastructure bill that Pelosi, Biden and Schumer believes creates runway for Democrat Senators KyrstenSinema and Joe Manchin to take a party line vote to pass a bill being drafted by Bernie Sanders that contained trillions of dollars in big government spending.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell ripped the idea Pelosi and Biden offered support for that would withhold a vote passing the bipartisan infrastructure bill Republicans negotiated their surrender on until the Senate passed Bernie Sanders’ bill.
Republicans quickly realized Democrats were using their votes to pass legislation to expand the socialist welfare state they oppose.
Minority Leader McConnell released a statement demanding Pelosi delink the two pieces of legislation.
“The President has appropriately delinked a potential bipartisan infrastructure bill from the massive, unrelated tax-and-spend plans that Democrats want to pursue on a partisan basis. Now I am calling on President Biden to engage Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi and make sure they follow his lead.
“Unless Leader Schumer and Speaker Pelosi walk-back their threats that they will refuse to send the president a bipartisan infrastructure bill unless they also separately pass trillions of dollars for unrelated tax hikes, wasteful spending, and Green New Deal socialism, then President Biden’s walk-back of his veto threat would be a hollow gesture.
“Republicans have been negotiating in bipartisan good faith to meet the real infrastructure needs of our nation. The President cannot let congressional Democrats hold a bipartisan bill hostage over a separate and partisan process.”
McConnell’s statement creates a new headache for Pelosi and Schumer.
Right now, there are just five guaranteed Republican votes for the infrastructure bill, far short of the ten necessary to break a GOP filibuster.
Without Mitch McConnell’s support there is no path to ten Republican Senators supporting the infrastructure bill.
If Republicans bank away from caving in on the infrastructure bill it may be more difficult for Sinema and Manchin to support Bernie Sanders big government spending bill.
Democrats believe Joe Biden’s Presidency is on the line with this bill.
Many on the left worry that if Biden fails to pass the Green New Deal and social welfare state spending bill now Democrats will have squandered the last best chance to transform America into a socialist nation in Biden’s first term.
