President Donald Trump could be heading for disaster.
That’s because his campaign just got hit with a poll that is sure to set off alarm bells.
And now it’s giving Trump a reason to fear 2020 like never before.
President Trump’s re-election prospects remain the same as they were at the start of the year.
The consensus among most political pundits is that while Trump remains in a decent position to win re-election, it’s by no means a sure thing.
And now, there’s some news that could change that analysis.
It’s all because one shock poll is suggesting that Trump could be heading for a massive disaster in 2020.
After tweeting his attacks on far-left Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar over her anti-American views, Trump inadvertently hurt himself in the process, at least according to one new poll.
The Daily Caller reports, “According to a new USA Today poll released Thursday, 57% of Republicans surveyed agree with President Donald Trump when he said that ‘Progressive Democrat Congresswomen’ should, ‘go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came from.’”
This isn’t great news for Trump.
While a clear majority of Republicans back the President’s tweets, 57% is far less than the +90% approval ratings Trump usually enjoys from Republicans whenever polls measure partisan approval ratings for the President.
This means that Republicans by and large aren’t as supportive of the tweets as they are of Trump as a whole, which means that Trump could be losing support from his own base for sending the tweets.
But there’s a far worse problem facing the President.
And that’s the fact that Americans as a whole seem to have been turned off by the tweets.
“Although the USA Today/Ipsos poll found support for Trump’s tweets among Republican voters, it also indicated a majority of Americans, 68%, found them offensive. Overall, 59% or respondents called the president’s tweets ‘un-American.’,” adds the Daily Caller.
This is a very dangerous sign.
Trump cannot afford to alienate or lose the critical swing voters that he managed to flip to his side in 2016.
Those are the voters that delivered him the White House first over his Republican primary opponents, and then over Hillary Clinton.
If Trump is losing them, like he appears to be in this poll, his path to re-election simply evaporates.
But there is one thing the President has going for him.
And that’s the fact that Democrats had to rally around Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib in response to his tweets.
It was that move which the President was expecting, because he wants the American people to connect all three of them with the wider Democratic Party due to the fact that all three are far more unpopular than Trump is.
If the President can paint the Democratic Party with the same radical brush that Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, and Tlaib have painted themselves with, then his re-election odds will skyrocket.
