With the impeachment of President Trump fully underway, the battle lines are being drawn over the future of Washington D.C.
But while Trump and the Democrats are going to war over impeachment, one unthinkable poll could change everything.
And the fallout from this latest impeachment poll just left Fox News stunned like never before.
Democrats just voted to impeach President Donald Trump.
And while the Senate trial will ultimately determine the fate of the President, opinion polls continue to be run to gauge what the American people think about the looming trial.
There’s ultimately little to zero chance that the President will actually be removed from office, as Republicans in the Senate have no reason to remove Trump from office.
But even so, one stunning new poll shows that the President may still be in trouble anyway.
And it just left Fox News hosts stunned.
Mediaite reports, “Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade told viewers he was ‘stunned’ by a Fox News poll that shows 54 percent support for impeachment, which is all the more stunning considering he misstated the result as only fifty percent.”
This could potentially be bad news for President Trump, who needs the American people on his side if he hopes to not just survive the looming impeachment trial, but also win re-election in 2020.
But for Fox, the report was nothing short of shocking.
“According to the latest Fox News poll, support for impeachment is holding steady, with 50% saying they favor impeaching and removing President Trump from office,” said Fox News correspondent Ellison Barber earlier this week.
“I was stunned to see that that’s the number. Because I thought that things were trending away, although the president’s approval rating did tick up in the same poll, so it’s almost like a split personality.”
What makes this poll so interesting is that the President’s approval rating is also climbing at the same time that support for impeachment is growing too.
It’s two dueling narratives going against one another, and the results could lead to a sharply divided electorate come next November.
“What that poll actually shows is 54 percent who support impeachment, and 50 percent who support impeachment and removal. Ellison Barber correctly stated the latter result, and simply did not mention the former. As Barber also noted, the Fox News poll has consistently shown this level of support for impeachment for several months,” adds Mediaite.
Democrats are pushing for impeachment precisely because they think they have broad public support.
But while the Fox News polls show that virtually every Democrat supports impeachment, it’s clear that Republicans remain overwhelmingly opposed to the move.
And this could also explain why the President’s approval rating is climbing as well, as Republicans close ranks around the President to defend him at the same time that Democrats launch an impeachment trial against him.
With Nancy Pelosi’s House having voted to send the impeachment proceedings to the Senate, only time will tell how much public support could shift over the course of the upcoming Senate trial.
