It was not supposed to work out this way.
Democrats thought arresting Donald Trump would end his political career.
But this shocking new poll about Trump’s arrest left Joe Biden pressing the panic button.
Democrats had anticipated that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicting Trump on sham charges in a political prosecution would give Trump a short-term boost in the GOP primary.
However, a new poll from McLaughlin and Associates showed the Democrats scheme to disqualify Trump in a 2024 General Election matchup with Joe Biden backfired in spectacular fashion.
The poll showed Donald Trump leading a multicandidate field in a GOP primary by 30 points – more than double his lead in their last survey.
“In a full-field ballot test of 14 potential Republican candidates, President Trump leads with 51%, DeSantis 21%, Mike Pence 6%, Nikki Haley 4%, and everyone else is at 2% or less. In our January survey, President Trump led the field with 43%, and DeSantis was at31%. Trump’s lead has gone from12 points to 30 points,” the McLaughlin and Associates polling memo stated.
Trump also grew his lead over Ron DeSantis in a one-on-one matchup to 33 points.
“In a one-on-one primary ballot test, President Trump beats Governor DeSantis 63% to 30%. Trump’s lead is up to 33 points from his January lead of 12 points (52% to 40%),” the polling memo read.
And Democrats expected that.
Joe Biden and his allies even hoped the indictment would boost Trump, as top Democrats believe Trump is the only Republican Joe Biden can defeat in 2024.
Polls show that the public thinks Biden is a failed president and too old to run for a second term.
So Biden and the Democrats were hoping they could use the indictment to scare off swing voters by campaigning on Trump “chaos” and that electing Trump would lead to four more years of drama.
But the new McLaughlin and Associates poll showed those hopes crashing and burning.
A plurality of the public sees the indictment for the politically motivated scam that it is.
“Most general election voters see the justice system being highly politicized. A plurality of voters, 48%, agree with the statement ‘Joe Biden and the radical left have weaponized the justice system to prosecute their political opponents.’ Only 39% disagreed. Republican primary voters agreed with this statement 82% to 11%,” the polling memo added.
And Donald Trump maintained a 4-point lead over Joe Biden in a 2024 rematch.
“In a general election ballot test, President Trump leads Joe Biden 47-43. This number is virtually unchanged from our March 2023 survey,” the polling memo revealed.
Indicting Donald Trump is a threshold-crossing moment for the country.
Republicans have elected prosecutors in red states who are now likely to target Joe Biden and other top Democrats with investigations and indictments.
And if Trump wins the 2024 election, Democrats will have to swallow all of the negatives, without any of the benefits, that stems from having opened pandora’s box and using the justice system to target their opponents.
