For over 20 years Nancy Pelosi was the unquestioned leader of the Democrat Party in Congress.
But Pelosi got a rude awakening.
Nancy Pelosi just got hit with one challenge from her own party that she never saw coming.
California Democrat Congressman Ro Khanna was the first member of his party to speak out and demand Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein resign.
Feinstein’s been recovering from a medical condition since March.
But her absence has far-reaching consequences for Democrats.
Feinstein sits on the Judiciary Committee and her not being present means Democrats do not have the votes to advance Joe Biden’s woke judicial nominees to the floor of the Senate for a confirmation vote.
Khanna posted on social media that Feinstein needs to step down so Democrats could appoint a full-time replacement to the Judiciary Committee and begin the process of ramming through Biden’s judicial picks.
“It’s time for @SenFeinstein to resign. We need to put the country ahead of personal loyalty. While she has had a lifetime of public service, it is obvious she can no longer fulfill her duties. Not speaking out undermines our credibility as elected representatives of the people,” Khanna declared.
Nancy Pelosi fired back declaring it sexist to demand Feinstein step down since Pelosi believes no one would make such a call for a male senator to retire.
“For 20 years I have been the leader or the speaker of the House fighting for California, and I have seen up close and firsthand her great leadership for our country but especially for our state of California,” Pelosi stated. “She deserves the respect to get well and be back on duty, and it’s interesting to me. I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Senator Feinstein in that way.”
The obvious comparison was Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Fetterman who’s been in and out of the hospital for months dealing the physical, cognitive and emotional aftereffects of the near-fatal stroke he suffered last May.
In an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Khanna responded to Pelosi and dismissed the comparison of Fetterman and Feinstein.
Khanna explained that Fetterman was in the hospital for clinical depression and that even before Feinstein’s absence there were whispers among Democrats that Feinstein is senile and unable to actually perform her duties as a senator.
“It’s one thing to take medical leave and come back. It’s another thing where you’re just not doing the job,” said Khanna. “The reality here is the sense that you need to have a deference to these senators who served so long. How about a deference to the American people? How about an expectation that if you sign up to do one of these jobs, you show up?” Khanna asked.
Khanna then doubled down on his call for Feinstein to resign saying the American people expect elected officials to show up for the jobs they were elected to do.
“This has to do with someone who is just not showing up, and I said out loud what people have been saying in private, and this is how the Beltway works. They don’t like it when you call out someone who’s in power, and that’s why people are unlikely to do it. But we’ve had so many calls from the American people and they say ‘Yeah, that’s right. If you’re gonna sign up to do these jobs, show up!’” Khanna exclaimed.
Democrats normally do not speak out against Nancy Pelosi like this.
But Khanna’s aggressive pushback shows the shifting dynamics since Americans fired Nancy Pelosi as speaker and Pelosi declined to pursue another leadership role.
