Democrats face an ever-narrowing path to maintain their majorities this November.
One just got closed off.
And Ron DeSantis just pulled this power play that will end Nancy Pelosi’s career.
After the 2020 election, Republicans held a massive advantage in controlling state legislatures and governor’s mansions.
That put Republicans in control of drawing the maps for more than 180 Congressional seats compared to around 90 for Democrats heading into the census where the maps are drawn for the next decade.
This portended doom for Democrats in 2022 as Republicans only needed to flip five seats to win back control of the House of Representatives.
But Democrats – led by Eric Holder and Barack Obama – rigged the redistricting process by filing lawsuits with liberal run State Supreme Courts in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Ohio to cut Republicans losses.
Democrats in deep blue states like Illinois wiped as many Republican districts off the map as they could.
Democrats actually appeared to have gained as many as five new solid Democrats seats after redistricting.
Those new seats could provide a margin for Democrats to cling to power this November.
But Ron DeSantis crushed that scheme.
Florida was one of the last states to finalize their Congressional District map.
Florida Republicans in the legislature tried to draw a map that complies with racial gerrymander rules which resulted in district lines that allowed Democrats to win far more Congressional seats in Florida than they deserved.
The point of contention was Florida’s Fifth Congressional District which is an outrageously drawn racial gerrymander to create a majority black district.
Governor DeSantis slammed the map as unconstitutional and racially discriminatory and refused to accept the legislatures map until they drew a far and color-blind map.
“We are not going to have a 200-mile gerrymander that divvies up people based on the color of their skin,” Governor DeSantis stated during a press event. “That is wrong. That’s not the way we’ve governed in the state of Florida. And obviously that will be litigated.”
After weeks of haggling the leaders in the Florida legislature finally agreed to let DeSantis draw the map that they would approve.
“At this time, Legislative reapportionment staff is not drafting or producing a map for introduction during the special session,” Florida state Senate President Wilton Simpson and state House Speaker Chris Sprowls said in a joint statement. “We are awaiting a communication from the Governor’s Office with a map that he will support. Our intention is to provide the Governor’s Office opportunities to present that information before House and Senate redistricting committees. We look forward to working with you next week as we complete our constitutional obligation for the 2022 redistricting process.”
Governor DeSantis’ proposed map is 20 districts solid Republican and eight solidly Democratic with one swing district.
This fair map for Florida would wipe out the Democrats gains of additional seats in the redistricting process.
And without that margin Nancy Pelosi may be out of job and heading back to California after November.
