She doesn’t want to believe it.
The Democrats are afraid.
Now, this shocking news could mean the end of Nancy Pelosi’s career.
2020 has been a long, painful, and difficult year for many people. From the coronavirus pandemic and all the resulting chaos to the utter chaos of the Presidential election, it has been a year for the history books.
But now it appears that 2021 will hold more uncertainty for the Democrats.
While they still hold a slim majority lead in the House, it is not likely Nancy Pelosi – or even another Democrat – will be elected as House speaker in the coming year.
But how? The Democrats still hold the lead, shouldn’t that secure her spot?
Not necessarily.
In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, emergency rules were put in place in May which allowed most Congress members to vote via proxy.
However, this rule will not apply to the election of a new Speaker of the House.
According to The Hill:
“the proxy-voting rule expires with the new Congress, requiring lawmakers to be in the Capitol in person if they want to participate in the Jan. 3 floor vote for Speaker.”
This means that candidates for Speaker of the House must receive a majority of the votes cast in person to be elected speaker.
This is bad news for the Democrats.
While the Democrats lead with a majority of 222 seats, Democrats are unhappy with Pelosi’s performance, especially this year.
Three moderate Democrats have expressed their varying reasons as to why they will not vote to re-elect Pelosi while many others suffer from serious health conditions that would put them at great risk if they attended the Jan. 3 vote.
Rep. Hank Johnson stated:
“COVID is a wild card. If we have sick members who cannot come back, and we only have a four-vote majority, it throws our entire advent of the 117th Congress in peril — a smooth advent.”
But her party is not alone in being upset with her decisions as Speaker of the House.
Ordinary Americans do not like the way she has led this year.
According to polls taken across the country, around fifty-six percent of voters do not believe Pelosi should be re-elected to her position.
Only thirty-one percent of voters continue to support her.
This small amount of support accurately reflects the damage Pelosi has done over this past year.
From suffocating restrictions and stalling aid to blatant hypocrisy, it is easy to see why so many are against her re-election and so few are for her.
In order for her to win her position again, not a single Democrat can get sick; all will have to attend the vote on Jan. 3.
But this simply isn’t possible.
