CNN is undergoing a shakeup that no one ever expected.
The changes are bigger than anyone would think.
And three banned words may cost two big name CNN hosts their jobs.
Now that the WarnerBrothers-Discovery merger is complete Warner-Discovery CEO David Zaslav is implementing his long-rumored changes at the network.
Axios recently reported that Zaslav tasked new network president Chris Licht with curtailing the liberal partisanship and bias on the network.
Licht immediately began trying to push CNN back towards the middle by telling producers to stop using the phrase “The Big Lie” to describe Donald Trump’s claims of fraud during the 2020 election because that phrase aligned CNN with a Democrat Party talking point.
“Licht also told producers that he would prefer them not to use the term “The Big Lie” when referring to attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 election. Licht is said to prefer “Trump’s lie,” or “lies about the election,” as opposed to something that sounds like a hashtag and flattens the complexity of the matter at hand,” Puck’s Dylan Byers exclusively reported.
In a previous report, Axios revealed that Licht would keep a close eye on the network’s on-air hosts and reporters to see who could follow the new editorial mandate not to come across as raging liberal partisans.
Axios reports:
CNN’s new boss Chris Licht is evaluating whether personalities and programming that grew polarizing during the Trump era can adapt to the network’s new priority to be less partisan.
Why it matters: If talent cannot adjust to a less partisan tone and strategy, they could be ousted, three sources familiar with the matter tell Axios.
Details: Licht wants to give personalities that may appear polarizing a chance to prove they’re willing to uphold the network’s values so that they don’t tarnish CNN’s journalism brand.
Byers reported that internally at CNN leftwing entertainer Jim Acosta and Democrat Party cheerleader Brian Stelter were the two names most likely to get the axe due to CNN’s newfound directive to stop being so overtly liberal.
“At CNN’s proverbial water-cooler, the most pressing question centers on whether or not any of Zucker’s truth warriors will lose their jobs. The Axios report mentioned just two on-air talents by name: Jim Acosta, the network’s famously confrontational White House correspondent, who wrote a book decrying Trump’s attacks on the press, and Brian Stelter, the outspoken media correspondent, who has devoted much of his on-air and online real estate over the years to calling out Trump and Fox News for attacks on the truth (and wrote a book about it, as well),” Byers reported.
Jim Acosta made himself famous through a series of performance art stunts picking fights with Donald Trump during Trump’s four years in office.
Acosta claimed it was so dangerous to tell the truth in Donald Trump’s America that he was paid handsomely to write a book criticizing Trump.
Stelter claims to be a media critic but devotes the overwhelming majority of his low-rated show to bashing Fox News and demanding social media censor conservatives.
CNN cutting Stelter and Acosta loose would send a message that it intends to reign in the worst excesses of its liberal bias.
But even still, the channel would remain a left leaning outlet.
