The 2020 election is coming down to a proxy war between Donald Trump and Barack Obama.
Joe Biden is running as Barack Obama’s stand in to defeat Trump and restore Obama’s third term.
Donald Trump hit Barack Obama with this defeat Democrats worry could seal victory.
The suburbs used to be reliable for Republican votes.
But for years the suburbs trended Democrat as college educated voters increasingly turned to the Democrat Party because of their cultural liberalism.
The Obama administration tried to inflict the kill shot on the idea of any suburbs remaining Republican by imposing the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule.
Under the AFFH rule it would be illegal for zoning laws to accommodate single family housing and would instead mandate suburban communities build low income multi-family housing.
Democrats count on Americans living in government housing to vote Democrat so using housing policy to pack suburbs with Democrat voters would ensure they would stop electing Republicans.
Donald Trump announced an end to this plan to destroy the suburbs on social media.
“I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood,” the President wrote. “Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule. Enjoy!”
Secretary of Housing and Urban development Ben Carson blasted the rule stating “we found it to be unworkable and ultimately a waste of time for localities to comply with, too often resulting in funds being steered away from communities that need them most.”
In 2016 Donald Trump narrowly won the suburban vote over Hillary Clinton.
But in 2018 the Democrats blue wave ran directly through the suburbs as Democrats routed Republicans in suburban districts from New Jersey to California.
Joe Biden won the Democrat Party nomination by winning the black vote while cleaning up in the suburbs giving the left confidence he could put together a winning coalition in the fall.
Donald Trump doesn’t need to win back all of the lost voters in the suburbs.
However, President Trump can’t get blown out in the suburbs like Republicans did in 2018.
The President hopes that emphasizing quality of life issues like the AFFH rule and framing the election as a choice between the President who will keep crime low and housing values high while rebuilding the economy will prove popular enough once contrasted with Joe Biden acting as the Trojan Horse for a radical socialist agenda that the people controlling Joe Biden will implement if they win power.
