You’ve probably have heard of Eddie Gallagher by now.
He’s the US Navy SEAL who was arrested for supposedly murdering a young ISIS combatant.
And what Donald Trump did for this Navy SEAL will have your jaw on the ground.
Which is a stretch to say the least because Trump hasn’t yet done anything to improve Gallagher’s situation.
Not to say he wouldn’t, but he hasn’t, yet.
And while Trump hasn’t done anything to help Gallagher out, this story has some good news woven through it. The kind of good news anyone who loves freedom and justice will love to hear.
Late Thursday, Eddie Gallagher was released from pre-trial confinement so he could be with his family before he stands trial to face charges of war crimes.
It was his 40th birthday, and for most of the day Gallagher was locked up, ready to defend himself against what he calls “false charges.”
While his family was able to spend some time by his side, they fully expected that they wouldn’t be able to be close to him for the rest of the day or the rest of the trial.
But then a stroke of good luck…
While his trial was supposed to start this week, it was delayed and Gallagher was released from pre-trial confinement because there was proof to show that prosecution had been spying on Gallagher’s defense team.
Now everything is delayed until next Friday the 7th, and Gallagher is free to spend time with his family for the first time since his home was raided in the middle of the night some months ago.
The entire saga of how Gallagher came to be imprisoned is a sad one.
Years ago, while fighting ISIS, Gallagher ended up shooting a young ISIS combatant. Those who would press charges against him said that Gallagher murdered the combatant in cold blood after coming up on the wounded man and stabbing him to death with a combat knife.
There are also charges that he fired indiscriminately into open crowds while was on deployment.
And yet those closest to him, other SEALS, commanders of his, as well as his wife say these charges are baseless and wrong.
In fact, there appears to be video evidence the crime in question didn’t take place as described.
As Breitbart reported: “A video of the actual incident was made available to members of Congress through Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who said the video proves that Gallagher was actually attempting to save the life of the ISIS fighter he is charged with killing, but rather rendering emergency field medical care to the fighter.”
Now here’s how Trump plays into all of this.
When Gallagher was first taken into custody he wasn’t imprisoned in a legal or ethical manner.
Authorities raided his home in the middle of the night, practically kidnapping him. After he was taken from his home, he was locked away in a facility that had substandard conditions and which also exposed him to dangerous criminals who could have tried to harm Gallagher.
The protest among the special operations community was so loud that it eventually reached the President’s ears. As of a few weeks ago, Trump was even considering a pardon for Gallagher.
No such pardon has been given, but one of Trump’s personal lawyers decided to take up Gallagher’s case.
Marc Mukasey, who is one of the President’s attorneys, decided to defend Gallagher based on the outcry over his imprisonment.
Because of that, and as well as the discussions of a possible pardon, many on the left bashed Trump. That would include Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who insulted the President because he was contemplating pardoning Gallagher.
So far Trump hasn’t done anything for Gallagher, and he may not have to now that the prosecution has been exposed as complicit in crimes against Gallagher.
Hopefully, truth and justice win out and the President doesn’t have to issue a pardon and could save it for another person who deserves it.
