There’s a medical emergency that most Democrats aren’t paying attention to.
And it’s about to make the coronavirus far worse.
William Barr gave a warning on the coronavirus lockdown America needs to hear.
At Olmsted Medical Center in Minnesota hospital and clinic volumes are down 60-70 percent as their routine procedures are canceled.
Facing a $25 million loss Olmsted Medical Center’s CEO and President have reduced their salaries by 20%. Physicians have had their salaries cut by 7.5%. Other staff is being furloughed and hourly workers are having their hours cut.
This problem is not unique to Olmsted Medical Center. Losses are being felt across the medical community.
Mayo Clinic has suffered $3 billion in losses due to the Chinese coronavirus because they’re only doing a quarter of their normal surgeries.
Quest Diagnostics is furloughing more than 4,000 employees. That’s 9% of their employees.
The lockdown is hurting America’s medical system, it’s caused 22 million people to apply for unemployment benefits and is unsustainable.
William Barr compared the lockdown to chemotherapy and worried that America is to the point where most of the lockdowns are doing more harm than good.
According to the Daily Wire:
Barr appeared on conservative host Hugh Hewitt’s radio show on Tuesday. The Justice Department head said that while strict government action may have been justified to slow the coronavirus, the overbearing regulations are risking doing more harm than good.
“These are unprecedented burdens on civil liberties right now. You know, the idea that you have to stay in your house is disturbingly close to house arrest,” Barr said. “I’m not saying it wasn’t justified. I’m not saying in some places it might still be justified. But it’s very onerous, as is shutting down your livelihood.”
Barr went on to compare the coronavirus-induced shutdowns to chemotherapy treatments for a cancer patient.
“Your first thing is to drive [the cancer] back to a more manageable state, and that’s what we’re doing and have done,” the attorney general said. “The question is, you can’t just keep on feeding the patient chemotherapy and say ‘well, we’re killing the cancer,’ because we’re getting to the point where we’re killing the patient.”
William Barr is correct that the lockdowns need to start being lifted carefully in most parts of the country.
Senior citizens and people with pre-existing conditions should still take extra precautions to try and avoid getting the virus.
The point of the lockdowns that most states implemented was to flatten the curve so that the medical system doesn’t get overwhelmed.
But in many parts of the country, the medical system isn’t even being utilized at its regular rate.
New York City is the exception to this rule and even there the hospitalizations have fallen from 1,627 new hospitalization admissions a day at the peak of the outbreak on April 6th to just 26 new hospitalizations on April 19th.
The number of cases is falling, American governors need to follow William Barr’s advice and start their economies up again.
