Ilhan Omar’s career is hanging by a thread.
With Democrats no longer in control of Congress, Omar could soon lose most of her power.
And now, it appears Republicans are on the verge of getting the votes needed to strip her of her most important committee in Congress.
Ever since she was first elected in 2018, Ilhan Omar has made a name for herself as one of the most radical Left-wing members of Congress.
One of the founding members of “The Squad”, Omar has consistently joined the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders on everything from debates over taxes to gun control.
But Omar’s record of consistently supporting the most Left-wing proposals that are thrown around in Washington, D.C. has not gone without controversy.
For one thing, Omar’s past comments on Israel have repeatedly led to accusations that she holds anti-sematic views.
And her controversial history has led to Omar’s support within her own district to erode over time.
Despite representing one of the bluest seats in the entire country, Omar regularly underperforms other Democrats when she runs for re-election, with the Democrat doing more than 20 points worse in her own seat than Joe Biden did in the 2020 elections.
Omar was also nearly thrown out of office in 2022, when she barely defeated a Democratic primary challenger by just a single point.
But Omar isn’t just losing power in her own district.
She’s also on the verge of losing what little power she has left in Washington, D.C.
The Washington Times reports, “House Republicans say they have the support necessary to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee despite public grumblings from a handful of GOP lawmakers about such a floor vote.
Ms. Omar, Minnesota Democrat and a progressive member of the “Squad,” has angered Republicans and moderate Democrats for antisemitic tropes she’s publicly stated.”
The push to remove Omar from her most important committee assignments comes at a time when Omar’s radical record is finally beginning to catch up with her.
And now that Republicans have taken control of the House of Representatives for the first time since Omar was initially elected to Congress, she may soon find herself without a seat on the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana told reporters Tuesday the GOP leadership team has been talking to its members and pointing out issues related to blocking Ms. Omar from the foreign affairs panel,” adds the Washington Times.
While Democrats have decried the push to remove Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee, they should have no one to blame but themselves.
That’s because Democrats set the precedent for removing members of Congress from committees back when they were in the majority and used their power to remove other Republicans as part of a larger political stunt.
And Republicans in Congress are pointing out that if Omar ends up losing her seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, it will be because of the work Nancy Pelosi did as Speaker.
