One would naturally assume that since Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House, she is one of the most well-liked Democrats in the nation.
The problem with being in a position of such high power is that other people are gunning to take you down; Pelosi is not exempt from this truth.
Now, Nancy Pelosi’s career is in jeopardy after this ally put a knife in her back.
Though Nancy Pelosi is in the headlines almost daily, the prima facie appearance of exuberant popularity might be a bit deceiving.
Scores of Democrats in the House don’t appreciate that Pelosi has been slow to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Though Pelosi has wisely demurred and refused to impeach (there is, after all, no real way to get Trump impeached because there’s nothing to impeach him on), her reluctance has earned her enemies in the House.
Even ones that should be close allies.
Among those who are becoming even more critical of Pelosi (and also the Democrats at large) is the controversial representative out of the Bronx, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Cortez seems to believe there’s more than enough evidence available to impeach Trump. And she considers Pelosi’s dithering a crime.
In a tweet, AOC called out her comrade in the House, “At this point, the bigger national scandal isn’t the president’s lawbreaking behavior – it is the Democratic Party’s refusal to impeach him for it,” she wrote.
She went on to say, “It is one thing for a sitting president to break the law. It’s another to let him.
The integrity of our democracy isn’t threatened when a president breaks the law. It’s threatened when we do nothing about it.
The GOP’s silence & refusal to act shouldn’t be a surprise. Ours is.”
Given the fact AOC has over five million followers on Twitter, this open attack on her party as well as its leading member could have disastrous effects on the midterm elections and could shake things up for Pelosi.
The embattled Speaker is already on her heels, with Democrats crying out for Trump’s impeachment. If enough people rally around Cortez, there could be trouble for Pelosi in the future, including the possible loss of her position as Speak of the House.
Of course, if it were just Cortez who was upset at Pelosi, that’d be one thing.
But consider this, one of the biggest heavyweights in the world of Democrat politics, Elizabeth Warren, is also upset with Pelosi.
Sen. Warren also jabbed at the California congresswoman.
Warren insisted, “Donald Trump did everything he could to obstruct justice. I read all 448 pages [of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the Russia investigation], and when I got to the end, I called for the impeachment of Donald Trump.”
For now, Trump is safe, and shouldn’t be worried about the Democrats.
Considering they’ve had almost all of the Mueller report in hand for more than three months and haven’t been able to do anything of substance, there shouldn’t be a reason for Trump to be concerned.
If anything, the battle that’s playing out before him (Dems turning on one another) may actually come to benefit him. If the Democrats tear each other apart, he’ll have no issue winning in 2020.
